It was a night of purpose and partying in Accra Ghana as the Global Citizen Festival took place on Saturday 24 September. Set against the historical backdrop of the country’s Black Star Square - a symbol of independence, democracy and resilience, the 10th edition of the Global Citizen Festival brought together more than 2,000 people to champion the eradication of extreme poverty and the achievement of other SDGs by 2030.
Many global citizens, artists and impact makers used the stage to address issues of climate change, women empowerment, economic growth, education and more at the festival. World and corporate leaders including US’s ambassador to Ghana; Virginia E. Palmer, representatives from United Nations and more used the opportunity to make pledges towards the advancement of different causes and projects on the African continent and the world.
American singer, SZA, who was performing in Africa for the first time, pledged her full support and commitment to the global goals championed by the Global Citizen initiative.
“I will do all that is within my power to make sure that we can save the beauty of Ghana and all parts of Africa.” she said.
Aside from the advocacy, festival-goers were thrilled to jam to diverse music genres like Amapiano, Afrobeats, Hip-Hop down to Grime performed by the global artists from Stormzy, Usher, Uncle Waffles the Amapiano princess, Stonebwoy, down to Sakordie.
Another poignant element that marked the Global Citizen Festival Accra edition was the unmissable street style of the fashionable festival-goers. The street style outlook was both powerful styles and more understated variations just as diverse as the crowd. Impressive and self-expressive looks was the hallmark of the street stylers. Think dark and moody colors for the alternative crowd, effervescent colors mixed with nostalgic elements for the kidcore aesthetic dressers and everything cool in between.
One festival-goer hopped on the Kidcore-cum-DIY trend with a sweet ode to 90s cartoons with colorful painted denim pants.
Meanwhile, another duo opted for ensembles made from bandannas, 80 sequins and sheer fabrics. One thing was certain - street style ruled the grounds .
