The iconic three stripe brand has just opened the most sustainable store in Africa at the V&A Waterfront. The store is currently undergoing LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system aimed at providing a framework for healthy, highly efficient green buildings.
Globally, adidas has committed to 9 out of 10 of its articles featuring a sustainable technology, material, design or manufacturing method by 2025, and to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
Marguerite Hofmeyr, representing Sentinel Ocean Alliance shared an overview of the Parley Ocean School, which they established in Hout Bay; while former freediving champion Hanli Prinsloo gave an update on her ocean conservation foundation, I Am Water and their Ocean Guardian programme.
Designer, Matte Edwards spoke about the inspiration behind his interpretation of how footwear could look in the future, through a sustainability lens. Matte also created a spectacular adidas Trefoil logo for the store, incorporating recycled plastic collected at a beach clean-up held at the Parley Ocean School earlier this year.
As a special touch and in lieu of corporate gifting, adidas partnered with Damian Willemse and reforestation non-profit, One Tree Planted, to donate 30 trees per guest to assist Damian’s fundraising drive to plant 35,000 indigenous trees in townships across the Western Cape.
