The first night of SA Fashion Week was a star-studded affair, with celebrities, entertainers, beauty and fashion lovers dressed to impress. Held at Sandton City in Joburg and featuring five days of the hottest autumn and winter collections, the show’s opening night highlight was the ‘Style by SA’ showcase attended by the who’s who of the fashion industry.
Spotted in the front row were Bonang, Nomzamo Mbatha, Maps Mamponyane, Lorna Maseko, Basetsana Kumalo and several fashion influencers, all eager to see the featured work of 10 local designers and collectives. Out of these chosen artists, four had been commissioned by Woolworths to produce pieces made using sustainable fibres. Local fashion frontrunners, Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, Selfi and AKJP rose to the occasion with a range conceptualised and designed from Better Cotton. With cotton sourced from the SADC region, and dyed using only eco-friendly chemicals, the showcase was more than simply a fashion statement – it was a win for the environment as well.
