The designer behind the jewellery and lingerie brand Ruby shares tips on small things with big impact.
1 Invest in staples
Comfort should be your first consideration when you buy lingerie, especially when it comes to the staples that every woman needs.
For everyday wear, choose organic cotton, which feels great on the skin and has less impact on the environment, and have three sets in white, black and nude: a wired or non-wired bra and matching things or boy shorts.
Then you want a sexy option in satin, silk or lace for special occasions. If those fabrics don’t appeal to you, choose a sultry style with ribbon ties in cotton.
Seamless underwear is a must for wearing under tight clothing, and a multi-strap bra is ideal for when you wear halterneck, cross-back and strapless dresses and tops.
2 Handle with care
If you want your lingerie to last, start by investing in high-quality pieces. Then, to take care of it, hand wash, hand wash, hand wash, hand wash!
Turn the pieces inside out first and wash similar colours together. Steer clear of the tumble dryer and just leave them to dry in the sun.
3 Try these trends
Luxury lingerie is back! Think classic French designs with a modern twist: the teddy (a leotard style) and the baby doll (a short, loose-fitting nightgown) are being combined with styles like the push-up bra to create great all-in-one garments. If you enjoy a playful and light-hearted look, try boy shorts or low-cut lace hipster panties with decorative ribbon trims.
When it comes to knickers, the trend has veered away from thongs and moved to full styles that provide more coverage, like high-waisted bottoms and hip-hugging briefs, which flatter all body shapes and sizes.
Now for the bras: look for soft cups and supportive, non-wired bras and delicate lace with quality stitching.
As for colours, bright shades have been replaced with a trend for subtler, more discreet hues, so consider soft pastels and high-shine metallics.
Of course, black is the beautiful and sexy classic that will never go out of style. Right now, you might want to try it in one of our favourite Ruby combinations – black lace pieces with details in soft pink or deep red.
More trends to try now: ribbon ties, bow backs, edgy leather trims and harnessed lingerie to add excitement to your overall lingerie look!
4 Mix it up
While there will always be a place for matching lingerie sets, even big brands like Victoria’s Secret are mixing separates and patterns. Fashionable prints at the moment include Asian and Aztec designs.
5 Accessories
Want to bring extra fun to the bedroom? Sheer, patterned stockings and suspenders spice things up. Add heels and bold jewellery, such as tasselled earrings and a statement necklace.
