The day you say yes to the most important person in your life, you want this beautiful moment to take place somewhere extra special – a captivating location that sets the scene for something truly magical and memorable to unfold.
Located on the outskirts of the picture-perfect hamlet of Montagu, the inspiring wedding & events destination, Cellar 1848 is where you want to start your journey.
Nestled in the scenic Breede River Valley, the Jordaan family has established a singular lifestyle destination that offers the best of both worlds. Easy to reach from Cape Town, yet far enough from the city and its bustling surrounds, it’s a space that celebrates the unspoiled beauty and tranquillity for which the region is so rightfully renowned.
Cellar 1848 – Where memories are made to last a lifetime
Nestled within the natural splendour of the Little Karoo on one of the oldest family-owned wine farms in South Africa, Cellar 1848 was previously known as Cabrieres. The beating heart of this extraordinary venue is the 200-year-old cellar that has been meticulously restored by Jean-Pierre and Jane Jordaan.
As descendants of the first French Huguenot to set foot on land at the Cape of Good Hope in the 1600s, the Jordaan family were the first to establish wine grapes in the Baden Valley, where the farm and historical cellar are still situated today.
The cellar is, in fact, one of the only buildings in the vicinity that survived the ravages of the Laingsburg flood in 1981 thanks to its striking location, perched on the edge of the sweeping alluvial plane that sustains this lush valley of vineyards and orchards that provides an elegant backdrop for weddings and events here today.
Restored to its former glory in 2008, Cellar 1848 has since become one of the most sought-after wedding and events destinations in the Montagu Valley, and it good reason – it offers a unique, turn-key solution for bridal couples, companies and event organisers who want to put together a gorgeous occasion with minimal effort.
This celebrated estate venue features an inspiring interior that took its design cues from history itself, honouring the building’s origins as a cellar, while making space for contemporary celebrations. With gorgeous natural light that pours in through the original windows, open rafters, and white-washed walls that showcase framed portions of the original rammed-earth structure, it’s a nod to the past, and a space to celebrate the future.
The venue’s convivial bar and built-in fireplace sets the scene for festivity, flowing out onto a stoep that overlooks the vineyards and rugged mountains beyond. A wide expanse of lawn and well-designed dance floor beckons outside, framed by Karee trees and a wise old oak that often shades wedding ceremonies on the estate.
Ease & convenience from start to finish
You'll find everything you need to host the most amazing event right at your fingertips at Cellar 1848. This includes all aspects from logistical support, to decor and flowers from reputable suppliers and vendors.
In fact, most couples opt to host both their ceremony and reception on the farm, which makes it very convenient for guests and hosts alike. Accommodation is available on this working estate, as well as an entire private eco-reserve area with boma facilities for exclusive use further up in the kloof (when booked in advance).
At Cellar 1848, venue hire includes exclusive use of the venue for reception and outside ceremony area on the farm, use of the bar, cutlery, crockery, crystal glassware, and additional décor elements for the reception; as well as French-style bistro tables and chairs, bar equipment, glasses, and more for the wedding cocktail hour.
The team is also on hand to clean Cellar 1848-owned facilities and items before and after the function.
To streamline things even further, Jane Jordaan recently passed over the management of the Cellar1848 venue Belia King, her culinary collaborator and a seasoned events expert who will now oversee events while Jane concentrates on the wines and accommodation.
Leeftijd Catering – Bringing your culinary vision for your event to life
Belia King from Leeftijd Catering recently joined the ranks at Cellar 1848 at the behest of Jane Jordaan, after the passionate pair worked together on a function and found that they enjoyed an immediate kinship and have a very similar approach to efficient event management.
Belia has run an exceptionally successful catering company since 2018. Initially called Belia King Catering, this thriving business has created delectable menus for countless weddings, parties, corporate functions, and private events in and around Cape Town in the Western Cape.
Belia was visiting her parents who live in Montagu when she met Jane and encountered the space at Cellar 1848 for the first time. Having grown up among the vineyards and mountains of the Little Karoo, she found the idea of swapping the bustling inner-city for the beauty of her home town quite irresistible.
When she made the move back to the lush Montagu valley, it was decided to rename her catering company to celebrate the lifetime of memories she'd made around the table with her family and friends. Now, Leeftijd Catering is ready to provide bridal parties, corporate clientele and private event organisers alike with seamless catering support that sets the scene for beautiful occasions.
Your event's food should never be an afterthought - it should be the golden ribbon that ties the whole experience together in a memorable way. Let Belia from Leeftijd Catering show you just how beautiful it could be.
