The front row at London Fashion Week is giving New York a run for its money. Before the fashion crowd shipped off to Milan, it was joined by none other than Queen Elizabeth II for a final runway sendoff. An actual royal! What’s more British than that?
The honour of her presence—the first ever, according to reports—was bestowed upon designer Richard Quinn, who was receiving the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at his fall 2018 show.
The prize itself was concepted by Angela Kelly, the personal advisor to the queen and the woman responsible for much of her wardrobe, including the blue tweed suit she wore to the show, which was designed by Kelly herself, according to WWD. Upon arrival, the 91-year-old scored a prime seat between Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, and Anna Wintour, the artistic director of Condé Nast.
“I feel really overwhelmed, actually,” Quinn told British Elle of having the queen at his show. (Bear in mind that the designer launched his label only in 2016.) “It’s kind of surreal. I knew one or two days ago, but until it actually happens you’re a bit like, ‘Oh, it is real.’ It’s insane.”
On Twitter, her office shared updates about her London Fashion Week whereabouts. Prior to the Richard Quinn show, Queen Elizabeth II visited the designer showroom to take in the collections seen on the runway a few days prior and meet with some of the emerging designers featured therein, along with Rush.

The queen seemed to really be enjoying Quinn’s fall 2018 collection.
Though, arguably, the audience loved watching the queen more.
