This year’s BBMAs, held at the T-Mobile Arena on 21 May in Las Vegas, were a smash hit, with classic stars like Cher and Celine Dion joining the lineup with the likes of Drake, Lorde, Miley Cyrus and more. Here’s a round-up of our favourite moments from this year’s show:
1 Celine Dion dressed as a swan/soft serve ice cream
Celine Dion sang ‘My heart will go on’, which was a bit of a cheap shot. She knows we can’t resist Jack and Rose (there was room on that door). Nevertheless, it was an emotional powerhouse of a performance that tugged at the heartstrings of BBMA watchers across the globe, and made us all ready to re-watch Titanic twenty years after its initial release.
2 Nicki Minaj’s nine-minute montage opens the BBMAs
Nine minutes of Nicki? Nine? Although it may have seemed like too much, the crowd loved it. Or perhaps they were just transfixed by her butt (and her backup dancers). With dozens of dancers to support her, as well as Lil Wayne, David Guetta and Jason Derulo, there was no way it wasn’t going to be a hit.
3 Drake won the BBMAs. He won the whole thing.
Drake performed ‘Gyalchester’ and wowed crowds by performing in the middle of exploding fire and water and doing his thang inside the famous Bellagio fountain. (Yes, an actual fountain.)
4 Cher, full stop.
At 71 years old, Cher won the well-deserved Icon Award. She performed ‘Believe’ and ‘If I could turn back time’, the two biggest hits of her career. She gave a humorous and charismatic speech and proved to all those watching the BBMAs that true style is timeless.
5 Miley reinvented herself. Again.
Gone are the days of Miley riding a wrecking ball naked and grinding worlds-perviest-man Robin Thicke. Once again, Hannah Montana donned a new disguise, bringing squeaky-clean Miley Cyrus back from hiatus . She sang her new single, ‘Malibu’ after her sister Noah introduced her with the line, “for the first time in years with pants on, my big sister Miley Cyrus!” (*groan*). Nevertheless, it’s great to have her back.
6 What was up with Halsey’s bra?
It’s like the photos you look at with regret after your Matric farewell, when you decided to strip and forgot that you were wearing a badly-fitting beige Woolies granny bra. Not the best outfit at the BBMAs by far.
7 Lorde sang Karaoke
Isn’t the whole point of karaoke that you’re really bad at singing, and it’s funny for the audience? Lorde didn’t seem to care and performed ‘Green light’ to the wild approval of fans.
8 Zayn doesn’t pitch
“Can’t make it to the # BBMAs tonight and know I’ve been away for a bit,” he wrote. “Finishing up these new songs for you. Be back soon.”
You call that an excuse? Please.
9 Twitter destroys the Chainsmokers
When ‘Closer’ comes on in the club, you go so wild your own mother would disown you. Despite this, the duo have a reputation for giving terrible performances and last night’s BBMAs were no exception. Better luck next time, I guess? They performed a song entitled ‘It’s hard when you’re young’. The entire world knows that, though, because it seems like that’s the only lyric.
10 Camilla Cabello, ex-Fifth Harmony singer, performs ‘Crying in the Club’
While she performed to general acclaim, Twitter followers were not as happy.
12 Vanessa Hudgens hosts the BBMAs
In the words of GLAMOUR’s art director, “I thought we left her in 2007?”. Apparently , Vanessa Hudgens is not dead or retired, but is readying for a comeback. She proved herself last night by being ready for anything that came her way, including a bit of rapping and some wild dancing when Cher took the stage. She even managed to impersonate every single artist. Hats off to her!
