THE queen bee of South African a-listers, Bonang Matheba hosted the annual Metro FM Music Awards this past weekend. Music met fashion in a gorgeous culmination of glitz and glamour, and Bonang shined brighter than any other in the SIX outfits she wore throughout the evening.
After the event, we caught up with Bonang to talk fashion, glamour and the red carpet.
GLAMOUR: How did you start working with stylist Law Roach?
Bonang: Before I ended 2015, I had set myself a vision board for 2016 and one of the things on there was expanding myself into a globally appealing brand. Fashion being my strong suit, it was the obvious… My publicists Brand Three Sixty Communications set on compiling a list of possible international stylists and Law was the one I selected. I recently met up with him in Los Angeles, and we just fell in love with each other’s thought process. And within less than two weeks of meeting, he came to South Africa to style me for the MMA15.
GLAMOUR: Why did you choose a celebrity fashion stylist from the United States?
Bonang: I have always been a supporter of South African designers and have worked with a number of them. In the last two years, my brand has expanded beyond South Africa, to the rest of the continent and I started exploring with designers from within the continent. Now that I am actively seeking a global presence, I realised that I had to explore and engage stylists who have a global footprint. Upon meeting Law in Los Angeles at his studio, it was apparent that he was the perfect choice. He understood my brand and my style. Our fashion affair was instant – the chemistry, the connection, we just got each other!
GLAMOUR: How would you define your fashion goals?
Bonang: From the moment I stepped into the media spotlight, I have always been associated with being one of the fashion trendsetters, thus for me every occasion is meticulously planned to send out a strong message. My fashion goal is to continue to make statements on the carpet, and set trends in fashion both at home and globally.
GLAMOUR: What is the most most glamorous item you wore for the event?
Bonang: My most glamorous gown worn for the MMA15 was the rose gold beaded gown by Yousef Al’Jasmi. My first look, the show opener. It’s fun and playful – just the right way to set the night’s tone. Appearance wise its an easy dress that fits me like a glove, but it is so HEAVY!!! The heaviest dress I have ever worn! It’s a stunner and I knew the first time I tried it on – it would be a statement for MMA15!
GLAMOUR: Could you share your secret for being glamorous with our readers?
Bonang: My secret for being glamorous is knowing what works for your body! Know and dress for your body, it always makes it easy to determine your style and of course always ensuring you dress for the occasion.
GLAMOUR: What is your number one fashion tip for our readers?
Bonang: My number one fashion tip is don’t buy based on trend, buy classic pieces. And remember this important tip: less always makes a HUGE fashion statement.
