The first Monday in May sees the fashion world host one of the biggest, most glamorous, parties in the world – the Met Ball Gala.
Mainly marked in our calendars as a day that we can lounge about, and/or nurse an epic hangover (that’s what public holidays are for right?), but it’s simultaneously seen as one of the important nights out in the fashion industry. In celebration of the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibition, designers flock from all around the world to dress their muse – whether an actor, singer or an elite socialite – in their interpretation of the respective theme.
This’s year’s theme is Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of T echnology , which looks at the distinction between garments created in the Haute Couture handmade process vs machine-made. Yes, it’s confusing. Does that mean Alicia Vikander will trade out her Louis Vuitton Belle look-alike dress from the Oscars, to her Ex Machina look? Probably not. We’ve looked at some of our favourite Met attendees, from Beyoncé to Rihanna, and paired them with what we’d love to see them wear on the big night.
Donning a zesty Roberto Cavali dress in Lemonade, will Beyonce turn to the house once again for this years dress? As a fan of the naked look last year, this AW 16 piece may be just the dress for Queen B. Perhaps she’ll wear it with a modest slip underneath – or maybe some more embellishment?
As one of Karl’s muses, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kendall swapped the Topshop dress she wore to last year’s ball for a Chanel look instead. The sleeves from this Haute Couture 16 dress offers a mix between Space Odyssey and Star Wars… that could be classed as Fashion in an Age of Technology right?
Balmain or Givenchy… Balmain or Givenchy. Deciding which one of your famous designer friends will dress you for a red carpet event must be hard… We think Kim should test this season’s cape trend for us, with this Givenchy Haute Couture 16 dress.
Rihanna’s look last year stole the show. Maybe her collaboration with Puma will make a red carpet appearance. It may be a bit heavy and black for a red carpet, but it does come with a diamond garter.
Erdem’s constant muse, Alexa Chung has worn his designs twice to the Met. Could three times be a charm with this silver and black sequin dress from his AW 16 collection?
Known for being a fashion risk-taker, we are excited to see what Solange will wear this year. Perhaps this design from Balenciaga’s new creative director Demna Gvasalia caught her eye.
