Over the past two years tri-state area reality ‘smoosh’ fest Jersey Shore has spawned four seasons of unforgettable characters, quotable one-liners and even two spin-offs.
In April 2011, Mtv announced its intention to produce two new reality series featuring some of the Jersey Shore stars. Jennifer “Jwoww” Farley and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi’s new misadventures as roommates after Jersey Shore’s conclusion was the premise for one, while Paul ‘Pauly-D’ Delvecchio’s cross-country DJing antics were to provide the, er, plot for another.
VH1’s also cashed in on the programming genius of the show’s creator, SallyAnn Salsano. They’ve announced that they’ll be producing her next ten-episode reality monster, Mama Drama.
Mama Drama’s cringe-worthy premise revolves around four mother-daughter pairs and one trio sharing a house. The twist? The moms are far more interested in partying with their daughters than parenting them.
In a recent interview about their new “docu-style social experiment,” a VH1 representative said “We see examples of this all around today with mothers living vicariously through their daughters. Part of this speaks to a new cultural definition of age with women in their 40s and 50s no longer constrained by rules about how they need to dress or act,” he continues. “In some cases, this allows them to forge strong bonds with their daughters and true friendships. In other cases, they cross the line and forget their role as a parent and a role model.”
The show seems laced with disaster-waiting-to-happen scenarios and as Salsano mentioned in an interview, “At any second chaos could erupt, and most days it did. When there was a fight in that house, it wasn’t a regular reality show squabble – it was personal. Whoever was saying something was going after someone’s mother or daughter.”
Needless to say, we can’t wait. Mama Drama debuts on January on VH1, and seems like the perfect New Year’s resolution motivator – or at least a way to feel better about the ones you’ve already broken.
