No longer just a young girl showing glimpses of talent, Lira has grown over the past two years into a gorgeously talented South African woman.
The SA superstar has just been nominated for a Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award in the category for Best International Act: Africa Division. Established in 2001 to celebrate African artists in multiple fields of entertainment, the ceremony has seen the likes of Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars and Drake cross its stage. The nomination follows the success of her 2008 album release, titled “Soul in Mind”. The platinum-selling multi-award winning album is described by Lira as “the sound of a woman getting into her own skin, of finding her own creative voice”. Having written some of the songs on the album herself, she has shown her amazing, humble and honest talent in the music industry.
But she hasn’t stopped there. Lira has made her cinematic debut in the film “The Italian Consul”, directed by Antonio Falduto, which premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in 2011. Lira is the second African songstress to grace the stage of the Teatro Del Greco since Miriam Makeba.
Lira cleaned up at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) in 2010, taking the prize for best female artist and best global chart DVD for “Live in Concert – a Celebration”; the first South African live music concert released on Blu-ray. She remains one of the country’s most loved performers. From the Joy of Jazz, Macufe Jazz Festival and the 2007 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, she has made a mark as a national music icon.
