Over the years, there has been plenty of speculation over the years that singers Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez once dated. In 2016, they stuck to the story that they were just friends. But that wasn’t enough to quell fans’s suspicions, as followers have eagerly looked to every clue imaginable as to what if anything went down.
When it came time for Charlie to debut the video for their joint song, “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” Selena was absent for the clip, which many took as a sign that there could have been a fallout between the two (even if the shoot could have simply not worked with her schedule). Fans also noticed that Charlie unfollowed Selena on Instagram in the middle of a messy Insta-battle with Justin Bieber. And people also noticed that a certain painting in Charlie’s recent music video for “How Long” looked an awful lot like Selena. So it’s only fitting that it now seems that Charlie is finally dropping some info about his connection with Selena in a new interview.
The singer and songwriter opened up to Billboard about working on “We Don’t Talk Anymore” with Selena. “It’s about a particular moment in my life when someone very close to me wanted the attention of somebody else,” he told the magazine. “When I found that out and we ended it, I might have done some shady things too, and she might have asked me, ‘How long has this been going on?’”
He also revealed that there was something between him and Selena even if it was for short period of time.
“I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” Charlie added. “And that’s what was happening [with Gomez].” It’s unclear if Charlie means that Selena could relate to the story, as his past telling of their collaboration says, or if he means there was “something else going on” between him and Selena. In any case, the connection Charlie experienced was “very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in — what I was getting myself into … And she evoked such good emotion on that song, it was a pleasure working with her. That’s why I’m always happy to sing it, even though it came from a dark point in my life.”
Fans have had a flurry of different reactions to the confirmation. Some think that he was blowing things out of proportion. One person wrote, “Charlie Puth made a song with Selena for only two damn weeks, that was 2 years ago. He more effected off that than Abel was dating Selena for 10 months. LMFAOOO LIKE BOY, PLS SIT TF DOWN.” Another person tweeted, “Charlie Puth really wrote 2 songs about Selena after spending 2 Weeks with her lol know wonder he thought him and Bella Thorne were dating.”
Meanwhile, others have defended the “Attention” singer. One fan wrote, “it’s sad that all Charlie did was tell his side of the story that people kept wanting to know yet he gets hate for it from Selena stans. leave him alone if you don’t like it. & Charlie didn’t even mention Justin at all, why mention him when Charlie didn’t?”
It’s important to take this all with a grain of salt. Clearly, Charlie had some feelings about his connection with Selena. But it’s unclear what Selena felt on her side of things. She has yet to comment on the new interview.
