Cara Delevingne closed Burberry’s runway show in a rainbow cape celebrating LGBTQ+ youth

When Cara Delevingne steps on the runway, all eyes are on her—after all, it’s not so often anymore that you see her on the Fashion Week catwalks. Her last Fashion Week appearance, as chronicled by  Vogue, was at Chanel’s Pre-Fall show in 2016. (She’s been turning to acting instead, which is no small thing.) But on Saturday, she was back in a big way: The model closed Burberry’s London Fashion Week show wearing a rainbow cape in a homage to LGBTQ+ rights, and the look pretty much went viral immediately.

The Saturday show was Burberry President and Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey’s last for the iconic British heritage brand, and he dedicated the entire collection to LGBTQ+ youth—fitting, since the U.K. celebrates LGBT History Month this month (as compared to the U.S.’s June Pride celebrations and October observation of LGBT History Month.)

“My final collection here at Burberry is dedicated to—and in support of—some of the best and brightest organizations supporting LGBTQ+ youth around the world,” Bailey said in a statement. “There has never been a more important time to say that in our diversity lies our strength and our creativity.”

Bailey even designed a Burberry plaid in solidarity with LGBTQ+ charities and nonprofits that integrates a rainbow stripe with the brand’s instantly recognizable beige, black, red, and white tartan.

Today we reveal #TheRainbowcheck and announce that #Burberry is supporting three LGBTQ+ charities, @AlbertKennedyTrust, @ILGAWorld and @TrevorProject, dedicated to broadening support for this community around the world. The rainbow, a symbol of inclusiveness and joy, is celebrated throughout the February 2018 collection . ‘My final collection here at Burberry is dedicated to and in support of – some of the best and brightest organisations supporting LGBTQ+ youth around the world. There has never been a more important time to say that in our diversity lies our strength, and our creativity.’ Christopher Bailey . #BurberryShow #LFW

The result of his efforts was overwhelmingly colourful, fun, and yes, young—in an of-the-moment way. Adwoa Aboah, a model, activist, and friend of Delevingne’s, opened the show wearing a billowing white skirt with rainbow stripes peeking out.

The closer of the show, however, was what might have just stolen it, and that was Delevingne in  that coat. It was a moment that took her back to where she started: Her first major gig as a model was walking Burberry’s fall runway in 2011.

With a floor-length hem, the rainbow faux fur coat—lined, of course, with the LGBTQ+ plaid and retailing for $5,500—was a showstopper of a closer. Considering her LGBTQ+ activism and outspokenness about her own sexuality (she’s identified as “fluid”), as well as her history with Burberry, Delevingne was the perfect choice to strut it down the runway.
