In a press conference held yesterday 27 October, E! Entertainment Television announced the nominees for African Social Star of 2021 at their annual People’s Choice Awards.
The awards, which celebrates all forms of entertainment chosen entirely by fans, includes a total of 40 categories across TV, music, movies, and pop culture.
This is the third year in a row that the African Social Star award has been included in the ceremony.
In the race for the award are 8 contenders including South African YouTube star Lasizwe, actress, model and entrepreneur Boity Thulo, make-up artist and beauty influencer Mihlali Ndamase, and TikTok sensation Witney Ramabulana.
Other Africans nominated in the category are Zimbabwean comedian Tyra Chikocho, Nigerian rapper Falz, Kenyan TikTok star Azziad Nasenya, self-empowerment advocate Sofiyat Ibrahim from Nigeria.
The Social Star award has established itself as a prestigious accolade among the African media and entertainment landscape.
Last year, Elsa Majimbo scooped the award while Bonang Matheba won the title in 2019.
Speaking on her nomination, Boity said: "Receiving this nomination is honestly a dream come true! I feel so honoured that the work that I do is being celebrated on such a massive platform. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!"
Mihlali also expressed excitement: "It's truly a fortunate moment for me to be nominated for this award on such a prestigious platform. Hopefully we'll take this one home, it isn't for me alone but for other creatives that need to fight for recognition and respect in the entertainment space."
The Official voting period for the People’s Choice Awards will run from 27 October to 17 November 2021. Fans can vote up to 25 times per day, per category, per method (website and Twitter).
The 2021 People’s Choice Awards will be broadcast on Tuesday 7 December on the E! Channel (DStv channel 124).
