You might recognize this beauty for her role as Winnie in Is’thunzi. Talented actress, writer and budding filmmaker Thuso Mbedu achieved international recognition when she was nominated for an Emmy Award for that role. She has gone on to win an award at the recent SAFTA‘s for best actresses and has been featured on Isibaya, Is’thunzi, Scandal, Saints & Sinners, MTV Shuga, as well as a cameo on the international series Liberty. As her success continues to grow we are showing you exactly why we find it so hard not to love her.
She is humble
She described winning the SAFTA as a pleasant and unexpected surprise and went on to say how honoured she was to be recognized in her home country.
She is passionate and determined
She always knew acting was her calling and her purpose but the journey to her success was not an easy one. In 2013 she graduated with an Honours Degree cum laude from Wits University. But even with these prestigious qualifications she still struggled to find work. This forced her to leave home with no financial backing and couch surfed from friend to friend as she couldn’t afford a place of her own. After years of booking small jobs and living from paycheck to paycheck she decided it was time to get serious and in 2016 she started writing scripts of the types of roles she could see herself playing and now a year later of hard work and determination she is starting to see the fruits of her labour and has said that she will stick through it even if hardships arise because it is part of life.
She is all about women empowerment
She has only ever played strong roles and gives thanks to God in that regard. She says she is always conscious of the roles that she accepts. Sandra Oh once said ‘Actually being able to exercise your own choice can bring about a greater opportunity’. She says it’s just as important what you say ‘no’ to as what you say ‘yes’ to.’ Those words have always stuck with her.
She takes advice to heart
She says that the best advice she has ever received is ‘Don’t do it for the accolades. Don’t start a lifestyle you can’t maintain. You do not have to conform to anything that you do not agree with, stand up for yourself.’ And she strives to live by that every day.
She is up for a challenge
She told GLAMOUR that the three ideal roles she wished she could play are Viola Davis (Annelise Keating) in How to Get Away with Murder, Taraji P. Henson (Cookie Lyon) in Empire, and Heath Ledger (the Joker) in Batman: The Dark Knight. She says that the aforementioned characters differ in immense ways and they are characters that would certainly challenge her as an artist. She says she always welcomes challenges as they result in growth.
