Here’s a statement: 2017 has been for Adwoa Aboah what 2013 was for Cara Delevingne. Yep, the 25-year-old has cemented a name for herself as one of the most exciting models in the industry, not least for her striking looks, enviably cool attitude and give-no-sh*ts style (more on that later). However, this year has seen Adwoa’s top model status taken to new levels altogether, booking the highly anticipated cover of Edward Enninful’s first British Vogue and winning Model of the Year at the Fashion Awards.
With that in mind, it’s probably time to get to know the face behind the cover…
1. She first got scouted at a school fashion show when she was 16
Speaking to GLAMOUR in September, Adwoa told us: “I did a school fashion show and I got scouted there but I wasn’t very interested in modelling at that point. But I’ve known Sarah Doukas and Storm [Model Management] for a long time, so when I got to about 17 I decided to go in and see her. I used to get scouted outside of Topshop and stuff, and I was brought up in the fashion industry and did a few shoots when I was young which was always fun to get dressed up.”
2. She’s was named Model of the Year at the 2017 Fashion Award
Adwoa beat Kaia Gerber, Winnie Harlow and sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, to take the top spot. On the night she wore a two-tone sequinned mini dress and matching turban by new designer Michael Halpern, paired with Louboutin wedges.
3. She’s the daughter of Camilla Lowther
Her mother Camilla, also in the fashion industry, founded CLM the artist management agency.
4. She made her catwalk debut at Giles Deacon spring summer 2011
Speaking to GLAMOUR, Adwoa said: “My first ever catwalk I did for Giles Deacon [pictured below] will, without doubt, be the most memorable just because it was the first one I ever did.
5. She’s teetotal
Adwoah has opened up about her experiences with addiction and depression in the past, a lot of which drove her to found Gurls Talk.
6. She founded Gurls Talk
Her innumerable magazine covers come only second to Gurls Talk – the online platform founded by Adwoa which encourages women to openly talk about mental health, diversity and addiction among other things, to redresses fears and worries that they’re alone.
7. She was born in Ladbroke Grove
She once told Vogue he favourite place in the world is on the sofa at her mum and dad’s house.
8. Her nickname is Woodge.
“My dad called me it, he always has and it just caught on. Woodgie or Woodge. Spelt W-O-O-D-G-E,” Adwoa told GLAMOUR.
9. She’d like to go into acting
Adwoa told GLAMOUR: “Yes I would like to give acting a go, I studied it for a long time, I just want to make sure when I do it I am able to put in as much effort as I do with modelling. So it’s going to come with time, and making sure I’d give it the time. I want them to take me seriously. My dream actress to work with would be Amy Adams.”
