Sheet mask and chill.
No one can deny, there's something supremely satisfying and deliciously indulgent about a sheet mask. Maybe it's the potent ingredients able to alleviate a host of skincare concerns, the instant glow-up, or simply the fun of the application. However, sheet masks are fast becoming one of our favourite things to do on lock down.
But with this increased number of at-home facials, we're burning through our skincare supplies at an alarming rate. Plus, many sheet masks aren't exactly environmentally friendly with non-biodegradable ingredients infused within the fibres as well as being a single use item that often contains plastics.
Luckily, there's an easy, DIY way to continue enjoying our favourite beauty pastime that's better for the planet and for our pockets, all the while being just as enjoyable and luxurious as classic sheet masks and by using items you probably have lying around. Here's your ultimate step-by-step guide to making your own sheet mask at home. You're welcome.
Step 1: Find a suitable cloth
Any face cloth will do, but a muslin cotton cloth like Liz Earle Pure Cotton Muslin Cloths, Eve Lom Muslin Cloths or REN Clean Skincare Cloths works best. Hold it up against your face and use an eyeliner or brow pencil to mark where your eyes, nostrils and mouth are.
Step 2: Cut out holes for your facial features
Like with a store-bought sheet mask, you'll need holes for your eyes, nose and mouth so you can sit back and relax for as long as you like while wearing it. Using scissors, cut small holes where you marked with the pencil. If you're feeling fancy, create flaps over the eyes instead of holes, which provides the option to treat your eyelids and under eye bags to the benefits of the skincare ingredients.
Step 3: Infuse your skincare
Now for the fun part. The best thing about making your own sheet mask is that you can infuse the cloth with different ingredients each time for a totally tailored approach and addressing the unique needs of your skin at that given moment.
In a bowl, mix together your face mask ingredients. For your base, you could brew some soothing camomile tea, or make some rice water, which is known for its anti-ageing and healing properties. Then you can add a skincare serum or another ingredient like tea tree oil or witch hazel, depending on your skincare concern.
Then, dip your cloth into the mixture and allow it to soak up as much as possible.
Step 4: Enjoy
All that's left to do is squeeze any excess off the cloth and apply it to your face. Sit back, relax and enjoy the benefits of a truly bespoke beauty treatment from the comfort of your own home.
When you've finished, simply rinse out the cloth with warm water and toss it into the wash so it's clean and ready to be used again.
