Priyanka Chopra took some time out of her busy schedule to share some of the beauty tips she’s learned from her mom, Madhu.
The two sat down with Harper’s Bazaar to spill their secrets, and in the clip, Chopra reveals that she picked up a lot of what she now knows about skin care from her mother. “Since she was a little girl, she always took care of her skin, and made me realize when I was a little girl the importance of it,” she tells Bazaar. “Of course when you’re young, you don’t listen as much, but as I grew older, I realized all these little tricks and amazing secrets that she had were integral to my skin.”
When Chopra first started competing in pageants in her late teens, Madhu was adamant about making sure she took care of her skin given all of the heavy makeup it was subjected to. “You must clean your skin very, very well before going to bed — that’s when your skin is breathing,” she explains. Both ladies swear by organic coconut oil for taking off makeup and note that the most effective way to use it is to leave it on your face for a few minutes and then remove it with a moist towel, so it can exfoliate and hydrate skin at the same time.
“And it just takes off all your makeup, and it really helped with my dry skin,” says Chopra. “And your pores say, ‘Ah, thank you,'” her mom confirms.
The mother-daughter duo also swear by a traditional Indian face mask called Ubtan, which Chopra credits for fixing pretty much all of her skin concerns (including a horrible sunburn she once got while filming a movie). You can find the full recipe, which is made of natural ingredients, here.
Though Chopra has her beauty routine on lock(and, might we add, it is really working for her), she didn’t always feel like the superstar she is today. “As a teenager, I had a lot of self-esteem issues. I was very concerned about a lot about how I looked; I didn’t feel beautiful,” says Chopra, noting that she didn’t “feel beautiful” until her late 20s.
In classic, doting mom style, Madhu tells her, “You didn’t realize it, but the world knew it, and I knew it.”
