Viral at-home skincare hacks that are harmful to your skin

When it comes to beauty, whether it be makeup or skincare, everyone loves a good at-home beauty hack. Some viral skincare hacks can be beneficial, however as convenient as they may seem, a lot of hacks out there are doing more harm than good to the skin. Whether you’ve heard or tried some of these hacks before, these are four skincare hacks that are said to be harmful to your skin.

Using lemon juice for spot clearing

Contrary to popular belief, everyone’s favourite kitchen ingredient for dark spots is unfortunately quite harmful to the skin. If a drop of lemon juice makes your mouth all sour and forces you to pucker your face, imagine what it does to your skin.

Although taking control of your blemishes and hyperpigmentation is a liberating feeling, using pure lemon juice directly on the skin can be quite damaging as it is very acidic. Using it directly on the skin could cause irritation or a burn when exposed to sunlight.

Sugar and salt as exfoliating scrubs

Sugar and salt may be great exfoliants for the body, but not so much for the face. Unlike scrubs made for the face, salt and sugar granules can have rough edges causing micro-tears and can be too harsh on sensitive skin, leaving it red and irritated.

@beautyjunkymonkey Sugar scrubs on the face or just a hell no for me. They caused microtears in the skin, which not only open up for bacterial infections, but also can cause pigmentation. ##scrubs##facemask##exfoliate##exfoluatingscrub##glowingskin ♬ original sound - BeautyJunkyMonkey

Raw egg whites for face tightening

With current beauty trends promising youthful, clear and flawless skin, people are willing to do just about anything to cut off a few years whether that’s through cosmetics procedures or at-home skincare recipes with groceries. While natural ingredients can often make luxurious at-home facials, not everything in our kitchens is suitable for our skin. Putting raw egg whites on your face poses a potential risk of salmonella infection.

Using hairspray as setting spray

This makeup hack is one of many TikTok hacks you should not try, and if you have, it’s best to not try it again. Hairspray contains many harsh chemicals that are not formulated for the face, but rather to hold your hair in place. Using hairspray to set your make up will cause irritation and flare ups in the long run, and even acne breakouts.

@cosmetology_sa It’s called HAIR spray not SKIN spray! 😶‍🌫️ While some viral trends are brilliant and effective, as a skincare expert I must warn you against this one! Hairspray has repellants in it that could irritate your skin, leaving it itchy, red and blotchy. These are just the short-term problems! Hairspray contains alcohol and lacquers that will dry out your skin, causing it to become dehydrated and result in hyperpigmentation or premature ageing! 🫠 If you’re worried about getting your make up on your clothes, please invest in a setting spray specifically designed for your skin. 🥰 Please and thank you 🤗 #beautyhacks #hacks #debunked #hairspray #hairsprayhack #makeuphack #dontdothis #dontdothisathome #makeuphacksandtricks #makeuptransferproof #cosmetology #hackoftheday #beautyhack #beautyexpert #beautytips #tipsoftheday #makeup #skincare #haircare #makeupremovalhacks #makeuphackstested #hacksthatdontwork #hairsprayhacks #beautyhacksforwomen #donttrythisathome😂![CDATA[]]>😂 ♬ BORN FOR THIS - Foxxi
