Beetlejuice lips: New Beetlejuice-inspired makeup trend exposes influencers

In light of Warner Bros’ new film ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, the beauty community wasted no time creating a Beetlejuice-inspired makeup look called “Beetlejuice lips”. As Halloween approaches, so does the end of some influencers’ long kept cosmetic secrets.

Beauty creator, @_hello_adri unintentionally opened a can of worms when she posted a TikTok video demonstrating the bright makeup trend that leaves black stripes on the lips, imitating Beetlejuice’s iconic striped suit. The video has since gone viral reaching 40.4 million views and 4.8 million likes.

Achieving this look is quite simple. All you need is a bright colour lip gloss or lipstick and black eyeshadow. First apply the lip gloss or lipstick to your lips. Once applied, purse your lips to the point they are scrunched up with wrinkles. While your lips are pursed, lightly apply the black eyeshadow. And the application is done. When you smile, your lips should be striped, as demonstrated by @_hello_adri.

As satisfying as the final result may look, not everyone is able to pull it off, no matter how many times they try. Gaining more traction, and as satisfying as the final result may look, the trend has left some creators disappointed in the results they received. Famously known for sharing makeup tutorials, reviews, and owning his own makeup brand, everyone’s favourite and trusted makeup guru, Jeffree Star, was one of many beauty creators who tried the trend to no avail.

Comments under his video suggested it may be because he has lip filler. Beauty creator @jacattack commented “It’s because [of] lip filler! I had mine dissolved and now all my lip wrinkles are back!”. Another user commented “Jeffery she doesn’t have lip filler so the lines are more prominent since she is able to purse her lips more”.

If your lips won’t wrinkle, then the black eye shadow is going to do nothing but coat the entire surface of your lips, leaving no effect. The use of collagen or implants can make it difficult to purse your lips and can prevent the appearance of lines on the lips. TikToker @sarcasm.generator confirmed this theory in her viral video responding to influencers who claim the makeup trick “doesn’t work”.

What’s the big deal? Well, beauty creators are constantly criticised for being dishonest with their supporters about their cosmetic procedures then selling or using products that they claim can make anyone look like them.

In response to @sarcasm.genrator, TikTok creator @natalieroseisuppose proved the posed theory by posting a compilation video of popular beauty creators with lip fillers trying the Beetlejuice lips trend versus the original creator @_hello_adri.

@natalieroseisuppose THIS TOOK FOREVER. Also no hate to those who get lip filler! But I got the idea after seeing another creator talk about it and I couldn’t rest until I executed it🫠 #fyp #foryoupage #beetlejuice #beetlejuicelips #makeuptrend ♬ sonido original - uraswiftielikeme

This is not to say that everyone who can’t achieve the Beetlejuice lips has lip filler. It could be because the application is done wrong or simply because some people’s lips don’t wrinkle as much as others’.
