There’s a natural chirpiness in the air with the full embrace of Summer and the festive season just around the corner. As much as we are all a fan of summer, with this season also comes the heat. Naturally, with the heat we can surely expect a lot of sweating everywhere!
With high temperatures, and an added humidity - there’s nothing worse than spending hours applying make-up only to have the scorching heat melt it off!
Don’t panic - there’s no need to make a drastic decision and become a non-makeup-wearer just to avoid the melting fiasco. The key to ensuring the longevity of your makeup is all about being strategic with your makeup application. In an effort to decrease make-up melt offs this summer, we called in professional makeup artists to give their best advice on how to get ‘summer-proof-makeup’ that will withstand the season of sweat.
It’s all about SKIN
When it comes down to it , the longevity of your makeup all depends on the maintenance of your skincare. Most of us tend to neglect our skincare, even though this is the most important step that will ensure your makeup lasts all day. “A well-maintained skincare routine will make sure that your makeup stays intact, providing a natural radiance and glowing complexion that’ll stand the test of time,” says Zita De Bruyn, Pro Make-up Artist.
Try keep it simple with your skincare routine in the mornings. You might be better off with fewer, light-weight layers of hydration. During the warmer months, we tend to produce a lot more oils and sweat. The last thing your skin needs is multiple slippery layers underneath that can cause piling.
Skin type matters
Concocting a skincare routine that is created for your skin type is an imperative part of your product choices and the longevity of your makeup. “Taking your skin type into account when working out the recipe for your skin, combatting oiliness, and dryness will largely impact the staying power of your makeup,” explains Professional Make-up artist Raine Tauber.
When it comes to the skin always opt to use products that offer hydration and steer clear from those that are overly drying or mattifying. “During the warmer months we tend to completely avoid products that mention hydration leaning more towards extremely mattifying products, however thirsty skin produces more sebum making the skin appear shinier,’ explains Raine.
“For the oily girls, opt for an oil-free moisturizer, that still offers hydration, and a mattifying primer. For those on the drier side choose a hydrating primer and dewy foundation, while being light-handed with the powder. Combination skin requires a balanced approach, going for lightweight products and being strategic,” suggests Zita.
Waterproof Products
“Keep a lookout for products that are labeled ‘longwear’, ‘sweat-resistant’, or ‘waterproof’. These formulas are designed to withstand moisture. I love the MAC Pro-Longwear Waterproof Foundation,” says Zita. Reaching for a lightweight foundation or skin tint during the warmer months will minimize the risk of your makeup melting off. “I love Skin Tints - they have a lightweight consistency that when applied adds a light wash of colour, and gives a more natural finish to the skin. If you feel like you still need that little bit of extra coverage, add a full coverage concealer to areas you feel need more coverage,” adds Zita.
“My ideal complexion product for the summer has to be a waterproof/ sweatproof one, my faves are MAC Studio Radiance Face & Body Foundation for a sheer, glossy option and the Dior Forever for a more matte and fuller coverage option,” shares Raine.

Setting the Face
If you want most of your makeup to last then go for a setting spray or translucent setting powder that’ll ensure your makeup stays intact. This also prevents shiny skin, and less stress about midday melting makeup.

All about the Touch-Ups
Don’t forget to touch-up during the day. Check up on your skin in the mirror at different points in the day. This is super important if you want your makeup to last.
“I always pack in a compact powder to touch up my foundation during the day. Go for a compact powder that is eaxtly that compact, so that it fits perfectly into your handbag, it also comes with a sponge for that easy application. It will help mattify and smooth your skin throughout the day plus add pigment if you want to refresh your look. I am also obsessed with little triangular puffs, they are a soft light fabric for light blending and soften any creases that may appear during the day,”- Zita.
Another recommendation from Raine, “blotting papers, pressed powder (loose is too messy for on the go) and a mattifying mist.” Blotting the face with a paper first will get rid of the excess oil and shine sitting on top of the skin and provide a smooth canvas for the application of loose powder. Raine goes in sparingly with a smallish brush to ensure that she doesn’t pick up too much product.
