Contrary to the false claims mainstream media is trying to sell, going bald isn’t a trend, nor is it a new phenomenon that people should try to emulate.
Many women of colour have been wearing the bald look for centuries, and some at least for a couple of years, for example, Sidra Smith has been bald for 15 years and Amber Rose for 14 years — locally, Noni Gasa, Pabi Moloi and Moozlie were bald since their entrance into the entertainment industry.
However, because of the political and societal situations that spanned over decades, women of colour have been altering themselves to fit the accepted standards of beauty, the assimilation of the western culture.
But now, women of colour are redefining themselves and returning to their roots. So, wearing natural hair and going bald is becoming a huge revolution.
The Black Panther film is also playing a prodigious role in how black women, specifically, see themselves and own their identity.
Many women who have done the big chop or returned to their natural curls have explained how liberating it is.
These women below, embody the meaning behind India Arie’s classic single, ‘I am not my hair’ and show confidence in their skin.
