Prepare to WOW with these essential weave tips!
1 Start strong
Your natural hair should be healthy and strong – a weave isn’t just an easy solution for covering up damaged strands. “Locks need to be at least 5cm long so your stylist can make plaits or tracks for the extensions,” says Yvonne Kungu at Cape Hair Company (021 424 0165). Brittle ends should be cut and breaking lengths strengthened, so start with a twice-weekly treatment to maintain moisture levels and stimulate growth.
2 Know your needs
When it comes to weaves, there are a lot of options, so do your research first!
- Remy hair has usually been dyed, straightened or chemically processed, but the cuticles (the outer part of the strand) are left intact. “This creates a natural look that’s soft, shiny and tangle-free” says Yvonne.
- Virgin hair hasn’t been chemically treated or dyed. “It’s 100% natural, so there is no damage to the cuticle, which protects the hair from the elements, like the sun. This creates a healthy, vibrant look that you can see and feel” explains Yvonne. Virgin hair is best if you want to invest in a weave that lasts longer (with proper care), or if you’r keen to dye your weave.
- A synthetic weave is made from man-made materials, but looks similar to human hair. “These strands are sensitive to the sun, they don’t last as long as human hair and they can be difficult to style. But a synthetic weave is also a cost-effective option,” say Yvonne.
3 Keep it clean
Wash your weave with a moisturising shampoo to get rid of any product on your scalp. “Brush your hair and then make a loose plait before you wash, and keep your plait in while you shampoo and condition to help prevent tangling. When it comes to rinsing, undo the plait and comb toward the ends” says Yvonne. Wash at least once a week, and between washes use a dry shampoo to refresh you style and get rid of impurities. Yvonne also suggests applying non-greasy oils to boost shine and prevent tangling. Just remember that products heavy loaded with oils or heavy waxes will weigh down your weave, leaving it greasy!
4 Replace it regularly
Don’t keep your weave in for more than six weeks at a time. As hair grows, dead strands are shed but because they’ve been braided under your weave, there’s no way to comb them out or release the tangles forming underneath. Try to give your locks a two week break before you redo your weave.
