We adore a good local story, especially when the story is about a power plant that’s good for our skin and health. Biochemist, Dr Jeanine Marnewick tells us why rooibos should be part of your life – if it isn’t already!
It’s a super antioxidant
Disease and ageing are caused by oxidative stress – this is when free radicals attack your body. Antioxidants are a great defence mechanism against these free radicals. “It’s advised to consume seven to 10 portions of fruit and veg a day which is not always realistic,” says Jeanine. “But drinking Rooibos tea is a great source of antioxidants. Just make sure to drink a cup every few hours as it’s not possible to bank those antioxidants.”
It’s unique
“Caffeine free and low in tannin, rooibos is a wonderful herbal tea – even great for babies,” says Jeanine. How do you know if you have a good quality Rooibos? “Break open the tea bag. The redder the tea leaves, the better the tea. If you see white pieces, those are the stems not the leaves.”
It’s great for your skin
“Research done on skin showed that, applied topically, rooibos reduces inflammation. This is important as inflammation leads to ageing and skin cancer.” Some studies showed that Rooibos can also help encourage hair growth for those suffering from alopecia.
It’s only grown in SA
Here’s a reason to be proud: this wonder anti-oxidant is grown in the Cedarberg, 230km north west of Cape Town. “Other countries have tried to grow it but failed. It flourishes in the dry climate of that area.”
