8 Myths and facts about sagging breasts

In the words of Halle Berry, “If you don’t want your boobs to hit your knees by the time you’re 30, always wear a bra, even to bed.”

Halle credits continuously wearing a bra as the reason she has such a perky pair; however, she might be misinformed. How much do you know about what causes (and doesn’t cause) your ladies to sag?

We turned to the pros at Satin Candy, an exclusive lingerie and bra boutique, to bust all the myths surrounding sagging breasts.

1 Exercises keeps your boobs from drooping

False–  Breasts consist of fat and glandular tissue, not muscle, which means there is nothing for you to tighten and tone. That said, chest exercises would strengthen the ligaments surrounding your pectoral area. Working on toning your Cooper’s ligaments can make your breasts look livelier.

2 As you age, the ladies begin to sag

True – Just like all the tissues in the body, breasts consist of elastin and collagen, both of which break down as we age. During menopause, fat replaces the breasts’ dense grandular tissue. This fat lacks the ability to support the breast, which makes it more likely to cause them to sag.

3 Sun tanning, diet and smoking can cause your breasts to droop

True – Although we have an abundance of sunshine here in South Africa, keep in mind that ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure does affect the look of your bust. Additionally, eating a high fat diet that lacks the proper nutrients, as well as smoking can contribute to sagging breasts. These lifestyle choices are detrimental because they breakdown your skin’s collagen.

4 Breastfeeding causes your boobs to sag

False – According to scientists and many scientific studies, breastfeeding does not cause breasts to sag. And it’s better for your baby.

5 Pregnancy can cause drooping breasts

True – Weight gain throughout a pregnancy can cause the ligaments supporting the breasts to stretch. This can lead to sagging because the connective tissue, (Cooper’s ligaments) that keeps your breasts perky begins to stretch. Although you cannot completely avoid drooping breasts, you can minimize these negative effects by sticking to a healthy weight gain during pregnancy.

6 Wearing a bra prevents a sagging bust

False – Although a bra holds the breasts up, giving you the shape and look you desire, it cannot prevent the inevitable drooping. This sagging occurs naturally throughout the aging process. The constant pull of gravity on the breasts is what causes them to droop. Unfortunately, there is very little that you; yourself, can do to prevent your chest from drooping.

7 It is not necessary to wear a sports bra for support during high impact activity

False – This is something that you can do to reduce the stress placed on your chest during your workout routine. According to one French researcher, wearing a typical bra actually encourages the breasts to sag. The study found that the bra weakens the tissues that support your bust; however, a supportive sports bra may be the exception. High impact exercises cause the breasts to bounce, which will eventually cause damage to the connective tissues in your chest area.

8 Plastic surgery procedures can help with sagging breasts

True  – There are plastic surgery procedures specifically designed to address various issues related to the breasts.
