Why a pink ‘pussyhat’ is the new must-have accessory

Krysten Ritter Who knew that Donald Trump’s pussy grabbing comments would lead to a global feminist fashion project? Enter the ‘pussyhat’: a hot pink, cat-eared, wooly fashion statement worn by millions of marching women this past weekend.

Whoopi Goldberg Krista Suh and Jayna Zweiman, founders of the Pussyhat Project, were inspired to use the controversial word ‘pussy’ after a video of Donald Trump making lewd comments about women was leaked to the media in October last year. In it, he says that “you can do anything”  to women, and “when you’re a star, they let you do it”, before going on to say “grab them by the pussy”.

Now the distinctive headgear has become the feminist symbol of protest in America and around the world.

Cate Blanchett“I would like the word ‘pussy’ to become de-stigmatised. The feminine is often denigrated and we aim to change that,” Jayna says. “I hope women and people across the spectrum, when wearing pussyhats, feel a sense of empowerment and solidarity, understanding it as a symbol for women’s rights.”
