SA Fashion Week is a hotly anticipated week on the fashion calendar with almost every show sold out. This season kicked off with the SS24 shows and Glamour had a front row seat to all the action.
Night one we got to experience the immense talent of the MRP Talent search competition finalists. Each finalist was tasked with creating their own prints and presenting a themed collection and were judged on their execution and creativity. The winner walked away with R50 000 in cash and the opportunity to design a collection under the MR. Price team to be sold in selected stores across the country. A dream come true for any emerging designer.The winner was Oddity by Jessica-Ann.
Imprint by Mzukisi Mbane titled his new collection “We are where we are because of prayers said” It was based upon the concept of faith and the impact and driving force it has on our lives. Using his Mom as inspiration, the garments were designed as an ode to the outfits she wore to church on a Sunday and the colours were inspired by tribal art works and ancient Nguni bead work.
Synonymous with vibrant colours and prints, Imprint presented a collection filled with pieces that were feminine, demure with hints of sexiness and interesting details such as feathers and ruffles. Layered looks and matching handbags were a strong feature and completed his collection.
Bam Collective ended the evening with a strong offering. On this collection Bam explains; “The use of metallics, fringing, contrasts between the organic and synthetic, sheer fabrics, optic eco prints, 3D forms and realistic floral motifs transposed onto sequin fabrics to explore the variety of ways movement can be displayed both tangible and optically.” The pieces had strong silhouettes accentuating the female form with cinched in waists, geometric prints added an exciting element to the looks and a recurring theme is the 3D forms which he showcased in his previous collection which has become somewhat of a signature.
All in all it was an exciting showcase of what South African designers have to offer.
