Glamour chats to Zonke Mthethwa about her running journey and shares her expert tips on enhancing your running performance.

Glamour: What a great initiative to be a part of a running crew for women. Why was it important for you to start this running crew and not join an existing crew like this?

Zonke: The Pack was founded to provide a safe and inclusive environment for women to run. Our space is geared towards enabling runners of all types, whether they are kicking off their journey or working towards realising particular distance goals e.g Marathon / Ultra Marathon. Beyond that, the community aspect is equally as important. We have been able to foster a space for women to connect on their shared experiences.

Glamour: How did your running journey start?

Zonke: I started running 12 years ago, as I was looking for an outlet to get fitter. My twin played an important part in motivating me to get started. We joined a crew established by Nike at the time (Braamfir Runners), and I kept going from there.

Glamour: What advice would you give women who still feel intimidated about joining a running group?

Zonke: My advice would be to get started. Sometimes we hold ourselves back based on perceptions we build on our minds, but I have found runners to be the supportive people. I guarantee they wouldn't regret taking that first step.

Glamour: What can runners expect from this run?

Zonke: A lot of energy, encouragement, good vibes and the exploration of new parts of the city!

Glamour: What tips can you share with the runners to enhance and optimise their running performance?

Zonke: Rest and hydration are very important. Another factor is fuelling correctly for their run. Output is impacted by not consuming the right types of food to boost your energy.

Glamour: What are the essential items needed for a successful run?

Zonke: A running bra for women is an absolute must! It's getting hot, so sunscreen is very much needed. Most importantly the right type of shoe, and shoe sizing can make or break you run. I highly recommend the Nike Pegasus 41, it's durable, lightweight, cushioned and goes the distance. Always remember to go one shoe size up, to accommodate feet swelling during the run.
