Tucked away in the vibrant heart of Woodstock lies 169 Victoria House,a stunning heritage building that has been beautifully transformed into a thriving creative hub. This enchanting venue, once a hotel house, now pulsates with artistic energy, attracting innovators, artists, and health practitioners alike.
On Friday, 06 December 2024, this captivating space played host to the eagerly anticipated launch of guitarist and producer Dylan Fine's debut album, "River Wide". As fans, family, and friends gathered within the historic walls of 169 Victoria House, the air was electric with excitement and anticipation.
The evening's opening acts were a testament to Dylan Fine's broad and diverse musical taste, delivering standout performances that perfectly paved the way for the premiere of his debut album. Kicking off with a high-energy DJ set was the incomparable DJ Simbad. His infectious grooves and rhythmic beats had the crowd swaying to the music, setting the tone for an unforgettable night.
Giuliette, a rising star of remarkable talent, was next on stage- with a voice and sound that defy description. Transcendent, and angelic, she transported the room to a jazzy, galactic realm, leaving the audience – including myself – utterly spellbound. Her talent is simply awe-inspiring, and I couldn't help but be swept away by her performance.
With his talented band by his side, the man of the moment, Dylan Fine, took to the stage, ready to mesmerise the audience. Before the music even began, the crowd's enthusiastic cheers acknowledged the culmination of Dylan Fine's tireless efforts, a beautiful moment of recognition for his artistry throughout the years. Having first encountered Dylan’s talent in 2019 I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride for his journey - how he has established himself amongst some of the most talented artist in South Africa, this moment was long overdue and witnessing it was priceless.
Dylan’s dynamic band, featured Angus Hardcastle on bass, Zeke Le Grange on saxophone, Kurt Bowers on drums, and Vuyo Nkasawe on keys, they brought the house down with their impeccable musicianship, and tight, cohesive sound. The first notes of 'Onset of Dawn' signalled the start of a musical adventure. Fine's guitar mastery was on full display, while the saxophone and drums conjured an otherworldly atmosphere, imbuing the room with an air of spirituality and anticipation, as if we were all on the cusp of a profound awakening.
As the second song 'You're Floating' filled the air, the mood shifted upward, carrying us on a sonic exploration, whispering tales of transformation and the urgent need for change, with the varying soundscapes crafting a breathtakingly beautiful atmosphere. "The third song, 'Falling', was a heart-wrencher, it brought tears to my eyes. The song's emotional resonance was palpable, and the bassline was the perfect accompaniment, adding a sense of warmth and intimacy to the song.
Taking a brief break from performing, Dylan Fine addressed the audience, revealing the inspirations and ideas that shaped his dubut album.“ The idea of ”River Wide“ speaks on the broadness of the river which reflects my broad music taste, I don’t think of myself as a master of any genre rather a master of sounds ”
The 7-track album 'River Wide' is a reflection of Dylan's versatility, seamlessly blending R&B, blues, and jazz influences. From the soulful undertones of 'Just Be Safe' the bluesy lament of 'Inside These Four Walls', the jazzy experimentation of 'Fynboss', and the nostalgic of the title track 'River Wide', the album's eclectic soundscape is a true demonstration of Dylan's artistic range. The album launch was an unforgettable experience, I left with a profound appreciation for Dylan Fine's dedication to his craft. He poured his heart and soul into creating something truly special, This serves as a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and creative vision.
