Can you share a bit about your journey in the automotive industry and how you reached your current position?
I started my career in the motoring industry in 2000. I worked for various passenger brands and have been exposed predominantly to Sales and Marketing, both new cars and After-sales. In that period, I had the opportunity to work and collaborate with different teams which helped me develop and enrich my overall understanding of the business. This made it possible for me to grow into senior positions over time.
How do you see the future of the LCV and SUV markets evolving, particularly in the context of sustainability?
I think the future of the LCV and SUV markets will be shaped by several key sustainability trends. Firstly, alternative fuel technology like biofuels and hydrogen will become more prominent, reducing carbon footprints. Improved fuel efficiency through advanced engines and aerodynamics will also play a crucial role. Secondly, the use of lightweight materials such as advanced composites and high-strength materials will make vehicles more fuel-efficient and eco-friendlier. Sustainable manufacturing practices and reduced energy consumption will become standard.
Hybrid technologies, combining internal combustion engines with electric powertrains – as well as other alternative propulsion technologies - will bridge the gap towards greener alternatives. Additionally, smart technologies like predictive maintenance and route optimisation will enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Finally, and hopefully a bolstered approach to regulation and incentives for greener technologies will help drive innovation and consumer adoption, leading to a more sustainable automotive industry.
What challenges have you faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry, and how have you overcome them?
Working in a male-dominated industry has presented several challenges, but they've also driven my growth and success. The lack of representation and mentorship has been a hurdle in different ways. To overcome it, I’ve sought mentors within the industry and networked with other women professionals for support and guidance.Balancing work and personal life is also challenging, especially when one also has academic commitments in the mix. However I have found that effective time management and fostering a supportive work environment with flexibility have been key strategies. Lastly, advocating for myself and others is crucial. I’ve learned to speak up for my ideas, seek advancement opportunities and support other women in their own growth journeys.
In your opinion, what unique perspectives and strengths do women bring to leadership roles in the automotive sector?
I think women bring a different perspective to decision-making, often considering a broader range of factors and potential impacts. This holistic approach can lead to more sustainable and ethical business practices. Women in leadership, particular, can inspire and mentor other women, promoting diversity and encouraging more women to pursue careers in the automotive sector, which strengthens the industry overall.
How do you balance the demands of such a high-pressure executive role with your personal life? Do you have any strategies or routines that help you maintain this balance?
Balancing a high-pressure executive role with personal life involves several key strategies. I prioritise and delegate tasks effectively, focusing on the most critical issues and ensuring I'm not overwhelmed. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time helps me recharge and stay productive. A strong support system provides essential encouragement and understanding. Lastly, staying flexible and adaptable allows me to handle unexpected changes and keep on top of everything.
What role do you think diversity and inclusion play in the success of companies within the automotive industry, and how do you promote these values within your team?
A diverse workforce brings together people from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. This diversity of thought can lead to more innovative solutions and creative approaches to problem-solving, which is essential in a competitive industry like ours. Companies that are known for their inclusive cultures are more attractive to potential employees as most seek and often prefer environments where they feel valued and included. To promote diversity and inclusion within the team, as a leader I have to demonstrate a genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion, setting the tone from the top and ensuring that these values are integrated into the company's culture and practices.
Have you had any mentors or role models who have influenced your career? If so, how have they impacted your professional development?
Yes, I’ve had very few mentors and role models who have profoundly influenced my career. Their guidance and advice have been invaluable, helping me navigate complex challenges and make informed decisions. Their support and encouragement have significantly boosted my confidence and motivated me to pursue ambitious goals which I previously would have shied away from. Additionally, they’ve introduced me to valuable professional networks and opportunities, broadening my industry connections and career prospects.
What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter and succeed in the corporate world?
My advice would be to seek out mentors who can offer valuable guidance, support, and industry insights, helping you navigate challenges and make informed decisions. Also, it's important to continuously enhance and refine your skills and educational background to remain competitive and relevant in the ever-evolving automotive industry. Attending industry events and actively networking with peers and leaders can significantly broaden your opportunities and strengthen your support network, opening doors to new possibilities and collaborations.
