Braids are a popular option during the colder months, for many reasons. They keep the hair protected for one, and the options are endless. Here, Nelisiwe Zangana, co-founder of Beauty and The Braid, weighs in.
Our hair requires additional care during the winter months due to various factors, including environmental conditions. “The cold outdoor weather can strip moisture from the hair, leaving it dry and fragile. When hair lacks moisture, it becomes more susceptible to breakage and split ends,” explains Nelisiwe. Warming to her theme, she says that wearing scarves and hats to stay warm further exacerbates the lack of moisture in the hair, “particularly because they can trap moisture close to the scalp. This trapped moisture can potentially lead to scalp issues such as dandruff, especially for individuals with sensitive scalps.” Consider that reduced sun exposure during the winter months also results in less natural Vitamin D for the scalp – essential for healthy hair growth, because it fosters a conducive environment for the hair and supports the proper functioning of the hair follicles. Nelisiwe affirms that there are various options available to address these concerns, “such as using hydrating shampoos, conditioners, serums and moisturisers to replenish the moisture in the hair; along with integrating hair masks into your routine, which can offer additional hydration and nourishment.”
She cautions against heat styling: blow dryers and hair straighteners can exacerbate dryness. “When heat styling is unavoidable, using a heat protectant beforehand can help minimise potential damage to the hair,” she says. A healthy and balanced diet also plays a crucial role in promoting healthy hair growth. “Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water ensures that your body remains hydrated from the inside out, benefiting your hair as well,” Nelisiwe explains. In addition to watching your diet and hydration, she also suggests incorporating protective styling techniques into your routine, such as wearing braids, sew-in weaves or wigs to help minimise friction and protect your hair from harsh weather conditions. “Furthermore, establishing a nighttime hair care regimen is a step that is sometimes overlooked; but sleeping with a satin or silk bonnet, or resting on a silk pillowcase, can help preserve the moisture and the integrity of your hair while you sleep.” Here are Nelisiwe’s recommendations for protective hairstyles:
