In commemoration of Celebrating World Water Day on 22 March 2022, We chatted to local South African brand A1 Fruit Water to share on the importance of celebrating World Water Day.
GLAMOUR: Tell us about your brand and how you started?
A1 Sparkling Water began with a vision to offer a healthier alternative to sugary drinks while providing a refreshing hydration experience. Our citrus-driven range of natural sparkling waters (Lemon, Mandarin and Grapefruit) are infused with real African fruit that gives you a hit of refreshing flavour, and aims to bring 'hydration by nature' to the South African market, becoming the first choice for infused sparkling water amongst health-conscious South African consumers.
A1 Fruit Water is made in South Africa and is committed to supporting the South African economy. We work with farming partners located in the sub-tropical mango and citrus-producing region of Hoedspruit in the north of the country. GLAMOUR: As we celebrate World Water Day, can you stress the importance of recognising this day as a country?
World Water Day serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of water conservation and access to clean water. As a country, acknowledging this day highlights our collective responsibility to safeguard this invaluable resource for current and future generations.
GLAMOUR: What does this day mean to you as a brand?
World Water Day aligns closely with our brand's ethos of promoting healthy hydration while respecting the environment. It's an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and to advocate for responsible water usage.
GLAMOUR: How are you celebrating this day?
We're celebrating World Water Day by highlighting the importance of hydration and sustainable water practices through our social media channels. Additionally, we're donating funds to Alex Water Warriors – a water-based charity for World Water Day.
GLAMOUR: What awareness do you hope to advocate for as a brand regarding celebrating this day? And what message do you have for South Africans?
We aim to raise awareness about the importance of cherishing water as a precious resource and the role each individual can play in conserving it. Our message to South Africans is to embrace sustainable water habits and to appreciate the value of clean water in our daily lives.
GLAMOUR: How does the brand support local communities?
To this day, many products sourced in Africa are exported raw to other countries, stripping the value of our continent. A1 is committed to keeping value in Africa, for the farmers who grow our fruit, to the factories who bottle our water. A1 water is a by-product of making African juice, keeping our impact low, our supply chain rooted in Africa and enabling a fair deal from farm to can. A1 Fruit Water is currently packed in a 300ml slim line can, which is wrapped in a sleeve. Both the sleeve and the can are recyclable.

INGREDIENTS
150ml A1 Sparkling Grapefruit
25ml Honey Syrup
25ml Lime Juice
3 Dashes of Bitter Truth Grapefruit Bitters
Pinch of Salt
Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a shaker combine honey syrup, lime juice, bitters, salt and crushed ice.
- Shake well.
- Pour into a glass over more crushed ice and top with A1 Fruit Water in Grapefruit flavour.
- Garnish with a grapefruit slice or peel.
