Embrace your heritage with these bold braids

For Heritage Month, braids emerge as a popular choice for several reasons. Not only do they provide protection for your hair, but the styling possibilities are limitless. Here, Nelisiwe Zangana, co-founder of Beauty and The Braid, shares her insights.

Our hair requires additional care, as it recovers from the cold winter months due to various factors, including environmental conditions. “The cold outdoor weather can strip moisture from the hair, leaving it dry and fragile. When hair lacks moisture, it becomes more susceptible to breakage and split ends,” explains Nelisiwe. Enlightening that wearing scarves and hats to stay warm further exacerbates the lack of moisture in the hair, “particularly because they can trap moisture close to the scalp. This trapped moisture can potentially lead to scalp issues such as dandruff, especially for individuals with sensitive scalps.”

Consider that reduced sun exposure during the winter months also results in less natural Vitamin D for the scalp – essential for healthy hair growth, because it fosters a conducive environment for the hair and supports the proper functioning of the hair follicles. Nelisiwe affirms that there are various options available to address these concerns, “such as using hydrating shampoos, conditioners, serums and moisturisers to replenish the moisture in the hair; along with integrating hair masks into your routine, which can offer additional hydration and nourishment.”

She cautions against heat styling: blow dryers and hair straighteners can exacerbate dryness. “When heat styling is unavoidable, using a heat protectant beforehand can help minimise potential damage to the hair,” she says. A healthy and balanced diet also plays a crucial role in promoting healthy hair growth. “Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water ensures that your body remains hydrated from the inside out, benefiting your hair as well,” Nelisiwe explains.

In addition to watching your diet and hydration, she also suggests incorporating protective styling techniques into your routine, such as wearing braids, sew-in weaves or wigs to help minimise friction and protect your hair from harsh weather conditions. “Furthermore, establishing a nighttime hair care regimen is a step that is sometimes overlooked; but sleeping with a satin or silk bonnet, or resting on a silk pillowcase, can help preserve the moisture and the integrity of your hair while you sleep.” Here are Nelisiwe’s recommendations for protective hairstyles:

Knotless Braids:

Knotless braids offer a low-maintenance and versatile solution for safeguarding your hair throughout the winter season. Requiring minimal upkeep, they are ideal for accommodating busy winter schedules. The gentle installation process of knotless braids alleviates tension on the scalp, reducing the likelihood of discomfort or damage. Moreover, these braids act as a protective shield against the harsh winter elements, shielding your natural hair from dryness and breakage.

We adore knotless braids for their natural-looking finish, which surpasses traditional braids due to the absence of bulky knots at the base of each braid. This creates a sleeker and more seamless appearance. Additionally, knotless braids use the feed-in method, which involves gradually adding small amounts of extension hair as the braid progresses. As a result, they feel lighter, exerting less tension on the scalp and offering greater comfort compared to traditional braids. This reduced tension also minimises the risk of hair breakage and traction alopecia, which can occur from prolonged pressure on the hair follicles.

While we love knotless braids, it’s essential to avoid wearing them for extended periods. We suggest a minimum duration of 4-5 weeks, with regular maintenance, as the growing- out process can exert stress on the natural hair. However, the longevity of the hairstyle itself reduces the necessity for frequent styling and manipulation, making knotless braids an absolute favourite! We also love the flexibility of knotless braids. They can be effortlessly styled into ponytails, buns or half-up “Requiring minimal upkeep, they are ideal for accommodating busy winter schedules.” hairstyles without concerns about visible bumps or knots, giving you the freedom to experiment with a variety of hairstyles. Why are knotless braids a popular option? When deciding whether to get knotless box braids or traditional box braids, it’s all about the technique and the final look.

Traditional box braids typically start with a knot at the base of each braid, which can feel heavy and put pressure on the scalp over time. In contrast, knotless braids gently incorporate hair extensions into your natural hair without forming knots like traditional braids. This results in a smoother and more seamless appearance, starting from the roots. One of the key advantages of knotless braids is their comfort. Without knots tugging at the roots, they typically feel lighter and place less strain on the scalp. This makes them a popular option for individuals with sensitive scalps, or those seeking a more comfortable braiding experience. Additionally, knotless braids tend to lie flatter against the head, making them simpler to style and maintain. Choosing between traditional braids and knotless braids ultimately depends on personal style, preference and hair type, even though traditional box braids have stood the test of time and are considered a classic choice by many.
