A look back at Zeitz MOCAA’s Silo Centenary Celebrations

On 24 September 2024, Zeitz MOCAA achieved a milestone of over 5,100 adult and over 600 children visitors who joined the museum to enjoy their Centenary Celebrations. The event coincided with Heritage Day, and the day's curated public programme brought together history, art and architecture.

Various activations took place throughout the day at the museum, offering locals an opportunity to reconnect with the museum as an accessible, social and culturally relevant meeting place within the Silo District, the V&A Waterfront and more significantly, Cape Town.

Some key moments

  • The opening of Zeitz MOCAA’s architecture exhibition titled Silo Through the Century: Into the Contemporary, an exhibition expanding on the rich history of the former grain silo and its transformation into a museum of contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora.
  • Visitors enjoyed cultural performances by Thanda Choir and Ikamva Marimba Band.

  • Guided tours conducted in all the official South African languages.
  • Live performance by South African trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantis at the Silo Concert, DJ sets, and an outdoor food court courtesy of Makers Landing.

The celebration also included art workshops for the whole family, face painting, and more while embracing the past and celebrating the future.
