It's here! At this point, it feels like we have been waiting for far too long for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film to drop at our local cinema and we are finally able to feast on the fuchsia delight.
After what feels like an endless press tour from the film’s stars Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken), in which Margot has served us some seriously iconic pink carpet looks, the film is now available in cinemas worldwide, and it is a treat.
While we got a glimpse into the premise of the film through the several teaser trailers that were released beforehand and - without saying too much - we now know that the film is a subtle dig at the patriarchy. Our reviewer even called the film a “feminist masterpiece”.
It sees a slew of Barbies and Kens living in Barbieland, which is shown to be a matriarchal society where women are presidents, astronauts, lawyers, doctors and nobel prize winners, and the Kens mainly hang out at the beach.
After suffering an existential crisis - including thoughts on death, cellulite and flat feet - Barbie and Ken venture to the real world where Barbie is chastised and they are introduced to the idea of the patriarchy (ew).
Without saying any more, it’s definitely a film worth going to the cinema for - and you might want to see it before you read Barbie quotes we’ve included (although most aren’t really spoilers). But, if you have seen the film and want to reminisce, you can read our favourite quotes from Barbie below.
