With her breakout role in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All alongside Timothée Chalamet, Canadian actor Taylor Russell is having a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. But not only is she one of Hollywood’s freshest new faces—Russell has all of the necessary A-list red carpet style nous to back it up. During the film’s press tour over the past month, the actor has been proving that she’s in a total fashion league of her own, choosing unique looks that stray from the glitzy status quo. No classic (read: boring) gowns here—Russell favors silhouettes that are more experimental and way more avant-garde.
Russell’s emergence as a real fashion girl kicked off back in September, when she opened designer Jonathan Anderson’s spring 2023 show for Loewe in Paris. Strutting down the runway in a strapless black dress and palm-shaped shoes, she totally owned the catwalk—and has since proceeded to shut down every step and repeat that she’s appeared on. One of her first premieres was at the Venice Film Festival back in September, when she wore a strapless green Balenciaga gown with white latex gloves, from Demna’s fall 2022 couture collection. With its ballooned skirt and open back, it was hardly a traditional choice—yet, it completely ruled.
Bold shapes have since continued to be one of Russell’s signatures on the carpet. In October, she hit the movie’s London premiere in a daring Schiaparelli couture look including a sharp-shouldered jacket, a champagne satin corset, a crepe skirt, and a wide-brimmed hat. This week in Hollywood, meanwhile, she sported a white and black dress from Loewe’s spring collection, complete with hip cutouts and an oversized bow at the front. (She’s even pulled off some incredible suiting; at the Milan premiere this week, she slipped into Alexander McQueen’s plunging-neckline tuxedo.)
Considering the fashion expectations that come with a global press tour of this nature, it’s safe to say Russell hasn’t buckled under the pressure. She’s carved out her own space with looks that embrace individuality—and when you have a heartthrob co-star like Chalamet who’s also a bold style renegade? It’s made the Bones and All red carpet a total delight to watch.
