Fashion photographer Zander Opperman shares his photography journey, career highlights and other interests.
1.What sparked your interest in photography and when did you realise you wanted to pursue this as a career.
Discovering my great grandfather’s portraits of my mother holding a puppy when she was a kid, they were black & white and moody but my mom looked very happy, it made me want to be there or at the very least also capture a moment so raw and beautiful.
2.Share some challenges you faced on your journey.
I think every day on set has it’s own challenges, they never end, which is sort of the fun part about this…figuring out how to work through it or how to work with it…whether it is lighting not working or the set-up not working out the way you’d hope.
3.Can you share some career highlights?
1 - Getting a personal email from Dior to ask if I could shoot a small campaign for them.
2 - Finally shooting a cover for Glamour and it being their first full length cover. WE DID IT JOE!
4.How would you describe your aesthetic?
I think I’m quite rigid but people close to me have described my way of working as a very loose approach to photography.
5.Favourite things to do?
Eating bagels, visiting galleries in town, hiking with my dog.
6.Quote you live by?
It’s never that serious.
7.Who are your favourite photographers?
Nicholas Alan Cope who’s an architectural photographer & Matthew Williams the creative director of 1017 ALYXSM & Givenchy but also shoots for both.
8.Is there a celebrity/model/personality that you would love to shoot?
Tilda Swinton & Tom Hardy.
9.What advice would you give aspiring photographers?
Try cancelling out the noise, don’t worry too much, everything takes time, working hard pays off.
