What Katniss did

As Mockingjay – Part 2 hits the cinema today (and concludes the Hunger Games franchise), here are six reasons why Katniss’s legacy will live on.

She brought Jennifer Lawrence to the masses

She was brilliant, yet under the general public’s radar, in Winter’s Bone and Like Crazy, and it wasn’t until she hit Panam that we really got to know Jennifer Lawrence, in all her straight-talking, self-deprecating, falling over glory. We’ve never looked back.

She doesn’t worry about being nice

To win the  Hunger Games, you have to be prepared to survive at all costs (as in, you have to murder people). Katniss Everdeen manages to do this by being vulnerable, smart and bad-ass. A truly complicated female lead.

She sparked an influx of kick-ass cinematic heroines

Between the raw material provided by author Suzanne Collins and Jennifer’s interpretation of the role, Katniss has become a byword for ‘action heroine’ and has proved that a female-led action franchise can be successful. Would Divergent have happened without her?

“I can survive just fine without either of them”

We’re as into the Katniss-Gale-Peeta love triangle as much as the next YA fan, but when she overhears the guys talking about who she’ll choose, this is her response. Sorry, Bella Swan, but it’s a much better message.

The braid

As iconic as the mockingjay, Katniss’s signature side braid has inspired countless online tutorials. Yet she’s alway been more than the sum of her hair or outfits. Yes, she was made over for the First Games, but she’s never let appearance define or change her.

She’s gat a hell of a way with a bow and arrow

Evidence suggests that interest in archery spikes among young women when one of the films is released. Archery clubs call it the ‘Katniss Factor’.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 opens today at cinemas nationwide.
