“Maybe I have super powers.”
“It felt like I was getting pranked,” Tyla says of receiving her first Grammy nomination for her hit song “Water.” But, lo, the 22-year-old singer took home her first trophy last night for best African music performance. “[I’ve always dreamt of] bringing more attention back home to our culture, and our music, and our dancing, and everything that is South African.”
Tyla’s success, to her, feels almost prophetic. “I had a dream that the song was going to blow up,” she says from the hair and makeup chair, “and it ended up happening—so maybe I have super powers.”
The brief was organic and sultry. And indeed, the singer—who donned an Atelier Versace dress for her special night—looked something like a mermaid caught in a fisherman’s net. With creative direction from Thato “thegmni” Nzaminade and help from stylists Katie Qian and Lee Trigg, she wore a draped seafoam green number complete with cutouts, green studs, and a sheer Swarovski crystal-studded fishnet. To give the look a personal touch, Tyla added diamond grills to her smile. “I’m shining on that carpet,” she says, “Come on!”
And just like that, Tyla is ready for the 2024 Grammys. “Enjoy your day, because I’m gonna enjoy my night,” she says, bidding us adieu.
