Local songstress and actress Simz Ngema spills the tea on her journey of becoming a new mom during a chaotic and uncertain period caused by the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic last year.
With her first Mother’s Day on Sunday, Ngema says that the biggest challenge she’s faced since her son Tiyani was born is the fear of contracting the Coronavirus and being unable to look after her precious new bundle.
“It was a very scary time for me. We didn’t have all the information on the Coronavirus at that time and I was in and out of medical facilities for ante-natal check-ups,” said the Gold series ambassador.
In the lead up to Tiyani’s arrival Simz says that she had many people tell her about the hardships of parenthood.
“I think people are quick to tell you about the challenges of new parenthood, but I’ve discovered many more facets to being a mom.
“No one tells you how fun it can be. I feel like I’ve gained a new little best friend with an amazing personality and the ability to learn incredible things every day! We have such fun together, ” said Ngema.
Simz said she was grateful for the support and love she received from friends and family during the time of Tiyani’s arrival.
“My advice to people is to check in on those new moms in their families or communities! Motherhood is a fulltime job and it’s just wonderful when someone takes the time to acknowledge your new role and tell you that you’re doing a great job.
“It can make all the difference to have cheerleaders around you,” said Ngema.
Talking about the balance between work and homelife, Simz says that it’s been difficult, but she’s had lots of help from partner Tino Chinyani.
“I’m blessed to have people around me to help when I’m working, but it can be exhausting to come back from a full day’s work and know that your child needs that special time with you, at your best,” said Ngema.
Simz says that the best gift a mother can receive this Mother’s Day is time out. “An hour off, a spa treatment, an evening out or a beautiful perfume from Gold Series will hit the spot for a time-starved mom,” added the new mom.
She says that any mom will agree that the best gift of all is seeing their child smiling and happy, but a special spoil this coming Sunday is a wonderful bonus.
