In our humble opinion, Serena Williams is a total badass. As well as being one of the world’s most talented athletes, Serena Williams is an outspoken and unapologetic feminist.
Forbes recently revealed its annual list of the top-earning female athletes and Queen Serena Williams assumed her rightful dollar making place at the top of the list.
But the star descended into fury at the US Open Final after receiving a penalty that could only be described as sexist.
She received one code violation for receiving coaching instructions from her coach in the crowd, although she insisted she was unaware of this and would “rather lose” than cheat.
Williams then made it clear that she felt she was unfairly treated and called the umpire a “thief” for costing her a point and ultimately, the match.
The star then broke down, and in the post-match press conference, claimed a male player would not have been punished in the same way. *Sips tea*
She said: “I’ve seen other men call other umpires several things”
“I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff. For me to say ‘thief,’ and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He’s never taken a game from a man because they said ‘thief’.”
During the game, Williams pleaded with the referee, Brian Earley, saying: “Because I’m a woman, you’re going to take this away from me?”
Her claims were supported by former tennis-pros, Bille Jean King and Victoria Azarenka, who tweeted: “If it was men’s match, this wouldn’t happen like this. It just wouldn’t.”
Not only did Serena receive penalties that cost her the tournament, but she was also handed a $17,000 fine for her remarks. Unfair or what?
Amid all of this, she made a point of congratulating Japan’s Naomi Osaka for her win, and it’s a known fact that Osaka has idolised Williams since she was a child.
But tennis certainly hasn’t been drama-free recently for Serena Williams, after her black panther catsuit was banned from the French Open.
In retaliation, the tennis ace donned a black tutu in the first round of the U.S. Open and her fans (that includes us, too) were absolutely loving it.
