It’s tricky to be the centre of attention on Oscar night, given that it’s a magnet for the most famous (and genetically blessed) people on the planet. But Rihanna’s unborn child already has form for stealing the show. The superstar mother-to-be has cultivated a wardrobe of looks that put the focus on her bump ever since announcing she was pregnant – think Coperni crop tops, Dior babydoll dresses and cut-out catsuits. Now, she’s outdone herself again in Valentino for Jay Z’s Oscars after-party at the Chateau Marmont.
For the occasion, Rihanna chose a black organza turtleneck gown with an oversized bow at the back, voluminous remboursée sleeves, and a long organza skirt and train embroidered all over with black sequins. The sheer top of the gown was in keeping with the mood of Rih’s maternity wardrobe, which has been all about celebrating her changing body and this new chapter in her life.
It’s also a more classic than usual fashion moment from Rihanna. Countless A-listers rely on the genius of Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino for their red-carpet gowns, but the Fenty mogul tends to prefer keeping style-watchers on their toes – see her papal John Galliano Met Gala look, or her entirely sheer Adam Selman gown for the 2014 CFDA Awards.
