So, Facebook Watch has a scripted series starring Rachel Kylian. At this point, you might be asking: ‘What is Facebook Watch?,’ ‘What’s the name of this scripted series?’ and ‘Who is Rachel Kylian?’
To answer your question: Facebook Watch is Facebook’s new video platform ( kinda like Youtube, but on Facebook); their scripted series is called ‘Strangers’ , and Rachel Kylian is an actress who stars in the series’ second season.
In an effort to get you clued up on the series, we had a chat with French actress Rachel Kylian about her role in the Refinery 29-produced show, her life in LA and how she feels about being a woman of colour in the entertainment industry.
So how does a girl from France get to Hollywood?
I came on vacation when I was young and fell in love with Los Angeles. There was something special about the city, the energy attracted me, and I remember telling myself if one day I have the opportunity to live in America, I would move to Los Angeles. I happened to win the “green card lottery” diversity immigration program in 2010 and decided to go to Hollywood.
Are you allowed to tell us which role would you be playing in the new season of ‘Strangers’?
I’m not sure I can share that, but I can tell you I am in season 2 episode 1, playing a new character.
What did you do to prepare for the role?
I did a lot of research about the show, to understand the story and the other characters. The show is an all-woman super team – female lead actresses, female creator, and a female director.
How does it feel to be a woman, and a woman of colour, in Hollywood within the current climate?
To be a woman of color has its ups and downs. I felt that in France being black was a disadvantage in the industry; in contrast, Hollywood embraces diversity, and I have been very lucky to work on many projects. Hollywood has opened its doors to me, and although I feel that there are more male than females roles, I think there are roles for everyone, no matter their colour.
However, I must say, that I have noticed a shift in the industry, and there is currently an increase in demand for “diversity”. Many projects such as the Black Panther movie have proven that actors of colour are able to explode box office earnings.
The storyline and the cast of Strangers are quite diverse and inclusive; why do you think this is important for TV or Web series?
I believe that art helps educate people; it is necessary for all types of people to be represented on TV. There is a huge community of homosexual/bi-sexual individuals in California, and I am sure they are very happy that this show was created.
I think that TV has to be representative of the reality of the world we live in, and this show is an excellent example of the current society in America.
Which words do you live by?
Love. Give. Try.
Are there any French beauty secrets that you can share with our readers, or could you offer your personal beauty tips?
French people don’t wear a lot of make-up but we do wear perfume. I wear Flower Bomb by Viktor & Rolf, I find that it is very sexy.
My personal beauty tips include getting enough sleep, working out (I do hot yoga). I believe in drinking water, eating healthily, and I don’t smoke or drink alcohol. I also make time to go to the spa; I love pampering myself.
‘Strangers’ Season 2 will air on Facebook Watch later this year. For now, watch the first episode of ‘Strangers’ Season 1, below:
