While we were watching endless hours of Netflix during the lockdown, Elsa Majimbo was cementing herself in the comedy space. The 19-year-old Kenyan became a YouTube sensation practically overnight with her wit and epic one-liners.
You are, like, the face of lockdown... You communicated in words what most of us were feeling. Did you know that?
Elsa Majimbo: I did. People would always comment, ‘Omg, me too!’ and the like. So I always felt connected to my audience.
Your social media exploded in just a few months. I mean, you have Anderson Cooper fanning over you, and Rihanna hollering at you with Fenty. How does that feel?
EM: It’s insane. Especially Rihanna! Everyone knows I’m obsessed with her. It’s a very humbling experience. I never imagined rubbing shoulders with the people I’m now meeting, and the fact that they’re fanning over me is awesome. People told me I’d get used to it, but so far I haven’t.I love freaking out, though, it’s fun.I hope that the butterflies never stop.
Did you ever imagine that your content would go viral? What does it mean to you when your work is acknowledged?
EM: I really didn’t imagine it at all. You see all these people online going viral every day, and some lives change. So, when it happened to me, I didn’t expect it, but I seized the opportunity, and now I’m building myself into the comedian and creator that I want to be.
