Demi Lovato’s experience at the 2016 Met Gala wasn’t great. If you forget, the “Sorry Not Singer” attended the event as a muse for Moschino designer Jeremy Scott; Nicki Minaj represented Scott at the ball too, and the three of them posed for several red-carpet photos ascending the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Because the Internet is petty, people were quick to think Minaj threw shade at Lovato when she uploaded a photo of the three of them at the event but tagged only herself and Scott. Granted, Lovato did add fuel to the fire when she posted her own pic, which showed Minaj giving her side-eye, and captioned it, “This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met 😂😂😂 #cool #sofuckingawkward #notforme.” However, to say there was beef between them just because of this is dumb.

Two years later, though, Lovato is doubling down on one thing about that night: She didn’t have fun. In a new interview with Billboard magazine, she says the whole spectacle of it made her so uncomfortable that it almost drove her to drink. (Lovato’s been sober for over five years, and she’s been quite vocal on social media about her journey to that lifestyle.)
“I had a terrible experience,” Lovato said. “This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink.”
She continued, “I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on—millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting. And I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala—fake and sucking the fashion industry’s dick.”
Fans on Twitter will probably spend hours trying to figure out who the “bitch” is in this story, but that’s not really the point. Maybe it’s Nicki Minaj; maybe it’s not. It’s not our place to say, and agonizing over this fabricated female feud just feels reductive—especially in 2018, and especially on International Women’s Day.
What is commendable, however, is how candidly Lovato speaks in this interview about the struggle to stay sober. Of course, she’s talked about this before, but her specificity here is particularly powerful. Anyone who’s struggled with addiction can probably relate to Lovato’s feelings in this moment. Every day is a challenge, and sometimes we forget that when we scroll through picture-perfect Instagram posts. Thanks, Demi, for unapologetically cutting through the artifice of Hollywood. It’s necessary.
