The Body Shop is at the forefront of ethical beauty and continues to lead the way in sustainably sourced Fairtrade ingredients. Never afraid to stand out from the crowd and advocate for what’s right— it’s well on its way to being the world’s most ethical and truly sustainable global brand. It was founded by Anita Roddick, an activist at heart. She built the brand on empowering women and girls with every product and business decision, striving for gender equality and using the business as a force for good.
“The Body Shop has always used its stores and products as mouthpieces to speak out on environmental and human rights issues,” says Carlos Jardim, GM of The Body Shop South Africa. “We value people for who they are and what they do, not just how they look. We want to help people – especially women and girls – to feel positive and proud about themselves, their bodies, and their futures.”
The core pillars of The Body Shop include:
Stop Gender-Based Violence
Today, more than ever, it’s committed to continuing Anita’s fight to empower women and girls all over the world. The Body Shop remains determined to spread awareness and support the fight against gender-based violence. The Body Shop is donating R10 for every hand-care product purchased to help stop gender-based violence, spread awareness and offer counselling to victims.
Community Fair Trade
The Body Shop was the first cosmetics retailer to operate a programme dedicated to trading fairly – Community Fair Trade – back in 1987. It sources ethical, high-quality ingredients and accessories from thousands of producers, farmers and artisans across the world.
Forever Against Animal Testing
The Body Shop products are 100% cruelty free. It has been campaigning against animal testing in cosmetics for more than 30 years and was the first global company to fight this cruelty and still continues to do so.
