In the ever-evolving world of digital beauty, beauty influencers are redefining the industry landscape. Brands are flocking to these influencers because they understand their power in shaping consumer trends and fostering engagement.

We had the chance to connect with some of these beauty industry disruptors to explore their journeys and learn how they've paved their way to success.

For Lisa, it wasn't something she planned; it just happened spontaneously! Her interest in beauty and skincare blossomed in her youth, which later then evolved into a fulfilling career that currently brings her a lot of joy. As the one who was always packed in a ton of toiletries and never enough clothes when she went anywhere, it was during COVID that she started sharing what she loves online.

GLAMOUR: What inspired you to start creating content online?

LISA STANFIELD: Honestly, it wasn't something I planned; it just kinda happened! But looking back now, it was meant to be. Ever since I was a little girl, I've been obsessed with all things beauty and skincare. I was always the one who packed a ton of toiletries and not enough clothes whenever I went anywhere! Then, when COVID hit and I was looking for ways to make ends meet, I thought, Why not share what I love online?

GLAMOUR: What are some of the misconceptions that people have about what you do?

LISA STANFIELD: The most common misconception I get is that 'it's not a real job.

GLAMOUR: What is the best part about producing content online?

LISA STANFIELD: The most rewarding part is helping people to understand their skin better and witnessing the excitement in the comments when a product I've recommended has worked for them. This makes my day every time!

GLAMOUR: What were some challenges you faced along the way, whilst being in the industry?

LISA STANFIELD: Definitely, finding a system that suits me and enables me to maintain consistency with my content and messaging has been crucial. I believe there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to building an action plan for your personal brand; it involves a lot of trial and error.

GLAMOUR: How do you protect your mental health and peace when having a strong online presence?

LISA STANFIELD: I've created a safe space for myself online by following people and pages that inspire and uplift me. Especially since a lot of my time is spent online, surrounding myself with positive content is crucial. Additionally, I put my phone away after 8pm in the evenings; this is a huge one for me! I sleep better and wake up with a clear mind the next day.

GLAMOUR: What advice can you share with those who are embarking on building their brand and getting started in the online space?

LISA STANFIELD: Just start. That's the scariest part, but if you wait to be perfect, you'll never take the first step. It's all about improving as you go.

GLAMOUR: The online beauty space in South Africa is growing exponentially. What valuable insights have you gained from your experience in this dynamic industry?

LISA STANFIELD: Putting my audience first is key; serving them is what enables me to keep doing what I love. It's tempting to prioritize pleasing brands with your content, but I've learnt that by consistently serving your audience, growth naturally follows.

GLAMOUR: In a heavily saturated industry, what sets you apart and allows you to push boundaries in your field?

LISA STANFIELD: Honesty is huge! I’ve turned down many paid campaigns because I didn't feel the brand aligned with my values. Genuinely believing in the brands I work with will always remain a top priority for me.

GLAMOUR: Which trends have you been inspired by this season and how have you incorporated them into your regime?

LISA STANFIELD: I'm completely obsessed with Pat McGrath's porcelain makeup look she created for the Maison Margiela Couture Show. I love glowing skin, and that was out of this world! Although I wish I could leave the house looking like that, haha, I always strive to maintain a glow with hydrating skincare and radiant makeup products.

GLAMOUR: A holy grail item and top tip for the winter season?

LISA STANFIELD: Oh, that's a tough one! It's like choosing your favorite child, haha. But if I had to pick one Holy Grail product, it would have to be a good retinol. I adore the Exuviance Retinol Serum; it's an investment for your skin! And a top tip for winter is definitely to focus more on moisturizing. Switching to a slightly heavier moisturizer can help your skin retain its moisture and stay protected from the cold weather.

GLAMOUR: Your favourite beauty moment?

LISA STANFIELD: Minimal glam, that was born during the pandemic. Nothing gets me more excited than makeup on healthy skin. And when dewy skin, clean base looks, and flushed cheeks became the moment, I was obsessed!, and still am!

GLAMOUR: Favourite Beauty product at the moment…

LISA STANFIELD: Umberto Giannini Banana Butter Repair & Restore Leave-in Conditioner (R369), it's decently priced and amazing for thirsty curls.
