How to go bright with blue liner

Gert-Johan Coetzee wowed us at South African Fashion Week with his breathtaking AW ’16 collection. The audience was treated to thirty-one looks that spanned the range from opulent Swarovski-encrusted showstoppers to figure-flattering ready-to-wear.

“My design inspiration for the new collection was the spirit and movement of water, bubbling and flowing along a riverbed, reflecting light, cascading down waterfalls,” Gert-Johan explains.

Apart from the gorgeous gowns, what really stood out for us was the incredible makeup! This bold and colourful look was created by Andrew James for Lancôme. Andrew was clearly inspired by the movement, body and colours of the collection, which showed through in this beautiful look.

We got exclusive backstage footage of Andrew working his makeup magic, and he has given us all the secrets to recreating this catwalk look. Watch, listen and be inspired!

The Skin:

Andrew wanted a natural complexion with just a hint of a glow. To create this he used Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra – a 24-hour foundation. He strobed the cheeks using a lighter shade of the foundation mixed with Lancôme’s DreamTone serum.

The Cheeks:

For a natural finish, Andrew decided against using any powder, allowing the skin’s natural glow to shine through. He finished off the face by blending the foundation with a brush.

The Eyes:

To create the dramatic eyes, Andrew kept the upper lids clean and accented the lower lids and lashes using Lancôme’s ArtLiner liquid eyeliner in cobalt blue. He created the ‘upside down’ wing by starting with a thicker line at the inner corner of the eye, which narrowed as it reached the outer corner. He applied Lancôme’s Gloss In Love to the brow bones for a shimmering effect. The top lashes were coated in Lancôme’s Grandiôse mascara.
