Feminist intimates brand, Koeksuster, releases fashion film

Cape Town-based intimates brand, Koeksuster, recently dropped a feminist fashion film, and it’s  fire!

The short film, titled, ‘Sisterhood and solidarity: An Ode to High School and Coming of Age,’  was directed by Thea Small, and takes a nostalgic look back on high school and what that experience could have been, and should have been.

Coming of age can be a very vulnerable time, you feel scrutinized by society and even more so by your peers. As a teenager, you are constantly policing yourself to act in accordance with what’s deemed appropriate by society. You feel insecure about your body, covering it up with towels in the changing room, and comparing yourself to all the other girls, wondering why you can’t just fit in. Founder of Koeksuster, Marli Grobbelaar felt that it was important to centre the film around four girls who reclaim and redefine this space.

On the film’s feminist imagery and subject matter, director, Thea Small said: “We wanted to create a dreamy hyper-feminine, space in which to explore the theme of sisterhood.”
