GLAM Review: A Roman getaway

When in Rome… stay at the fabulous Hotel Lord Byron!

It’s been named the Eternal City, the Sacred City and the Capital of the World, but whatever you call it, Rome is a magnificent place for love, creativity and sensuality. From priceless artistic treasures to marvellous shoes and fashion, ancient wonders to fabulous food, romance and pleasure abound in this place, which has been celebrated for centuries.

A romantic destination if ever there was one!

All of which means, you’ll want somewhere equally romantic to stay – somewhere that is unique, memorable and luxurious. And that is exactly what you will find at beautiful Lord Byron boutique hotel.

Named after the swashbuckling English poet George Gordon Byron – the genius, heartbreaker and literary Mick Jagger of his day – Hotel Lord Byron is an elegant, five-story jewel-box situated in the exclusive Parioli neighbourhood.

It’s a stroll from the rolling Borghese gardens and the Borghese Palace, and an even briefer and equally lovely stroll to the Modern Art museum. Want to get to the city centre? A 15-minute walk will take you to the Via Veneto, Plaza de Populi, Spanish Steps and a host of churches (there seems to be a church on every corner of Rome, all fascinating, marvelously decorated and divinely hushed).  But here, at the top of a winding road, all is calm elegance, white marble and glamour.

The life’s work of proprietor Amedeo Ottaviani, Lord Byron is a tribute to all things Art Deco. The nostalgic theme begins with grandly curving marble steps at the entrance, and goes on to reception rooms filled exquisite 1930s furniture and paintings, gleaming brass fittings and pretty outdoor areas.

Accommodation can be small in European hotels, but the 32 rooms and suites here are beautifully proportioned and all are complete with aircon, free WI-Fi and a 24-hour concierge service. Think beautiful linen, luxurious marble bathroom, and details like bicycles for hotel guests who are so inclined.

Then there is Il Salotto, the hotel’s bar and lounge – glossy, sensual and one of the best places to find a superb cocktail or to sip on a glass of Italian spumante. The renowned in-house restaurant, Sapori de Lord Byron serves sensational breakfasts as well as great lunches and dinners.
